Does a 1,000Hz Gaming Monitor Make a Difference? Refresh Rate, FPS, and Motion Clarity

A 1,000Hz monitor updates every millisecond, but its real-world value depends on your game's frame rate, PC, motion clarity, feature trade-offs, and budget.

Yes, a 1,000Hz gaming monitor can make a technical difference, but that does not guarantee a dramatic or noticeable improvement for every player. It refreshes every 1 millisecond, compared with 2 milliseconds at 500Hz. To use that faster update rate, a game and PC must deliver frames quickly enough; motion clarity also depends on pixel transitions, image persistence, and blur-reduction features.

What 1,000Hz changes

Refresh rate is how many times per second a display can update its image. The interval between refreshes is 1,000 milliseconds divided by the refresh rate:

Refresh rate Time between refreshes
500Hz 2ms
1,000Hz 1ms

Those intervals describe the display’s update schedule, not how quickly a particular game renders. A 1,000Hz screen can refresh more often than a game supplies new frames, but refreshing more often does not create new game-rendered information. The practical gain depends on the game, the frame rate your system can sustain, and how you perceive and use the result. LG explicitly cautions that support for 1,000Hz does not guarantee 1,000 FPS or higher in any game.

Refresh rate is not frame rate

Refresh rate is the monitor’s capability, measured in hertz (Hz). Frame rate is how many frames the game renders or outputs each second, measured in frames per second (FPS). They are related, but they are not interchangeable: buying a 1,000Hz display does not make a game render at 1,000 FPS.

If a game produces frames more slowly than the monitor can refresh, some display refreshes will not contain a newly rendered game frame. Conversely, a high refresh-rate mode only has a chance to show its full potential when the game and PC can deliver a sufficiently high frame rate. LG notes that system and game limits affect performance on its 25G590B-B product page.

Why motion clarity is more than a Hz number

Refresh rate is only one part of how clearly moving objects appear. Motion clarity can also depend on how long each image remains visible, how quickly pixels transition between colors, the consistency of frame delivery, and whether the monitor offers a blur-reduction mode. A fast refresh rate alone does not tell you how much ghosting or perceived blur you will see in a particular game.

Blur-reduction features may use strobing or other techniques to reduce the time an image is visible. These features can involve trade-offs in how they work alongside adaptive sync, and compatibility varies by monitor. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC Pulsar as combining adaptive-sync behavior with strobing. Check a specific monitor’s documentation to see which features can run together.

Native refresh versus “effective motion clarity”

A monitor’s native refresh rate is the rate at which its display mode refreshes. Some blur-reduction marketing instead uses an “effective motion clarity” figure that accounts for reduced image persistence. NVIDIA says its ULMB 2 figure is calculated using refresh rate and strobe duty cycle; it is a blur-reduction metric, not the panel’s native refresh rate. See NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 explanation for how that figure is described.

When comparing monitors, distinguish the native rate at the resolution you plan to use from any effective-clarity number. Also check whether strobing is available at that mode and whether it can be used with variable refresh rate (VRR), which aligns display updates with changing game output.

What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you

NVIDIA Research’s 2026 study examined frame rates up to 500 FPS in first-person-shooter tasks and reports perceived benefits across the range it tested. It did not test 1,000Hz, so it cannot establish that all players will gain a particular benefit at 1,000Hz. That distinction matters: results at tested frame rates are not a universal promise about a different refresh-rate target or every player’s experience.

LG Display’s July 2026 announcement describes company-reported work on input lag and motion blur at higher OLED refresh rates. Those findings should be understood as the company’s report about its own experimental work, not independent proof that every player benefits equally from a 1,000Hz monitor.

A real example: LG UltraGear 25G590B-B

LG’s 25G590B-B is a 25-inch-class Full HD (1920 × 1080) display with a native 1,000Hz mode. The U.S. product listing names MBR Pro, G-SYNC compatibility, FreeSync Premium, DisplayPort 2.1, and HDMI 2.1. LG says reaching the maximum refresh rate requires Windows 11, qualifying recent graphics hardware, and DisplayPort 2.1; confirm the current product documentation and your system’s compatibility before buying. LG also says its 1,100Hz overclock can limit adaptive-sync functionality, so do not assume every high-refresh mode supports every feature simultaneously. Details are on the product page.

LG announced U.S. availability and a price of $999.99 on August 24, 2026. That is the announced U.S. price, not a guarantee of today’s price or stock; check the announcement and current listings for availability.

How to decide whether 1,000Hz is right for you

  • Check your actual frame rates. Consider the games you play and what your PC can sustain, rather than assuming the monitor will produce frames for you.
  • Compare at your intended resolution. The named LG example is Full HD; decide whether that resolution suits your priorities before focusing on its refresh-rate ceiling.
  • Look beyond the refresh-rate headline. Compare pixel transitions, visible ghosting, frame delivery, and available blur reduction.
  • Check VRR and strobing together. Confirm whether the modes you want can operate simultaneously; overclocking or other display modes may limit adaptive-sync functionality.
  • Weigh the cost against your use. A premium native refresh rate is useful only if your games, system, and preferences let you take advantage of it. The announced price for LG’s U.S. example was $999.99 in August 2026, but current pricing and stock can change.
