Yes—if you use YouTube’s encoder workflow, a live source must keep sending the video and audio feed. That source can be a computer running encoder software, a hardware encoder, or a hosted playout service. You do not have to sit beside it, but YouTube will not keep receiving the feed if the source stops transmitting.
A scheduled stream or YouTube watch page is not itself the media source. This is about the encoder-based workflow for a continuous, pre-produced music broadcast; YouTube’s general live-stream guidance does not establish a separate 24/7 music exception or require a particular encoder device.
What has to stay on for a continuous stream?
The encoder—or an equivalent service generating and sending the feed—must remain active while the broadcast is on air. YouTube’s setup process has you enter the stream URL and key into an encoder, start the encoder, and then go live. Stopping the feed ends the encoder-supplied broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes this workflow.
That does not mean a person has to keep operating the controls. Once configured and started, a system can run unattended. Whether it restarts after a crash or reconnects after a network interruption depends on the encoder or service and its configuration—not on a general YouTube guarantee.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ways to keep the feed running
| Approach | What remains active | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — cloud playout for YouTube, always on from the cloud, supports uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | The cloud service sends the feed; your computer can be off. | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. YouTube only; the service plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. |
| Software encoder on a computer | The computer, encoder software, media playback and network connection. | You control the local setup, but power loss, updates, crashes or an internet outage can interrupt it. Plan for monitoring and recovery. |
| Hardware encoder | The encoder appliance, network connection and the system supplying its media input. | YouTube does not mandate or certify a particular model in the cited guidance. Confirm the device supports the protocol, codec and automation behavior you need. |
| Another hosted or cloud playout service | The provider’s service generates and sends the feed. | Check its YouTube support, media handling, recovery behavior, rights responsibilities and pricing directly; these vary by provider. |
Cloud hosting moves the continuously running encoder away from your home; it does not make reliability automatic. Evaluate how the specific setup handles monitoring, failure and recovery.
Set up and test the YouTube encoder workflow
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Create the stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Configure the encoder. Copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the key like a password; do not share it publicly. Follow YouTube’s setup steps.
- Use supported transmission settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and video codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Prefer RTMPS where supported because it encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. Check the current encoder settings guidance for the settings relevant to your encoder.
- Test the actual stream. Verify the intended audio and video before relying on the broadcast, and monitor stream health while it runs. YouTube recommends testing before going live; use the test to catch wrong keys, missing audio, unstable bandwidth or settings that do not match the source.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. Your upload connection must sustain the outgoing feed. YouTube advises keeping streaming use below available upload capacity, with 20% room. If you plan a backup feed, account for its traffic too. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Exercise failover if you have a backup encoder. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and checking that playback switches to the backup. A configured backup is not useful unless the transition works in practice.
- Plan recordings separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one continuous stream longer than 12 hours—including a 24/7 broadcast—will have a complete replay. Arrange separate recordings if you need a full copy, and do not rely on the archive as your only record.
What happens if the encoder stops?
If the encoder or hosted equivalent stops transmitting, YouTube no longer receives that source’s live feed. A reconnect or automatic restart may restore it, but that depends on the system you use and how it is configured. YouTube’s general setup guidance does not promise that a stopped encoder will recover by itself.

For a local setup, consider how you will notice a failure and restart the encoder, restore the network connection or switch to a backup. For a hosted service, verify its monitoring and recovery behavior with the provider. Test the failure path rather than assuming that continuous playback will resume.
Music rights and 24/7 format considerations
Using an encoder does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the music, nor does it make a 24/7 music format exempt from YouTube’s ordinary rules. Confirm that you have the rights needed for the music and any associated recordings before streaming. The general encoder guidance cited here does not establish a distinct approval or exemption for 24/7 music broadcasts, or resolve music-rights and monetization questions for a particular channel.
