Yes—an authentic Sony DUALSHOCK 4 can work with a PS3, but it is not a complete DUALSHOCK 3 replacement. You can generally use it with a data-capable micro-USB cable, and direct Bluetooth pairing can also work on compatible PS3 system software. However, the PS3 usually recognizes it as a generic Wireless Controller, so the PS button, Sixaxis motion, pressure-sensitive inputs, rumble, headset audio, and game-specific functions may be missing or inconsistent.
For a quick test, try USB first. For dependable compatibility across PS3 games, especially motion- or pressure-sensitive titles, use a genuine DUALSHOCK 3 or a controller converter with clearly documented PS3 support.

Which PS4 controllers does this apply to?
This guide primarily concerns genuine Sony DUALSHOCK 4 controllers, including the commonly encountered hardware revisions. Officially licensed third-party PS4 controllers may work, but their USB and Bluetooth behavior can differ.

Does it work on every PS3 model?
Compatibility is not determined simply by whether the console is a Fat, Slim, or Super Slim model. The important variables are the PS3’s system software, whether the controller is genuine, whether you use USB or Bluetooth, and what the individual game requires.
A successful connection on one PS3 or in one game does not prove full compatibility everywhere. Sony’s current PS3 user guide explains how to pair Bluetooth-compatible devices, but it does not promise complete DUALSHOCK 4 support. Direct DUALSHOCK 4 use is therefore best described as functional but limited rather than as official, feature-complete DUALSHOCK 3 support.
How to use a DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS3 by USB
Wired connection is the best first test because it avoids Bluetooth pairing variables.

- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the console with a data-capable micro-USB cable.
- Wait for the controller to be detected.
- Test the D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, analog sticks, and the controls corresponding to Start and Select in the XMB or a game.
A charge-only cable can power or charge the controller without carrying controller data. The light bar turning on does not prove that the PS3 has established a usable controller connection.
USB support was reported before wireless DUALSHOCK 4 support was enabled on the PS3. A contemporary report documented wired use and later Bluetooth pairing after PS3 system software support was introduced in 2014: Time’s report on DUALSHOCK 4 and PS3 compatibility.

How to pair a DUALSHOCK 4 with a PS3 wirelessly
The PS3’s documented Bluetooth menu path is:
Settings → Accessory Settings → Manage Bluetooth Devices → Register New Device → Start Scanning
Then pair the controller as follows:
- Open the PS3 Bluetooth-device menu.
- Select Register New Device.
- Select Start Scanning.
- On the DUALSHOCK 4, hold Share + PS until the light bar begins flashing.
- Select Wireless Controller when it appears.
- Complete registration if the PS3 requests a passkey.
The controller commonly appears as Wireless Controller, not DUALSHOCK 4. That name matters: it indicates that the PS3 is handling the device as a generic Bluetooth controller rather than providing full native DUALSHOCK 3 behavior. The PS3 manual also explains how to manage or delete registered Bluetooth devices from the same menu.

- You may need to pair the controller again when switching between a PS3 and PS4.
- Wireless support can work in the XMB but behave differently inside a game.
- The PS button, vibration, motion controls, and other functions may not behave as they do on a PS4.
- If pairing fails, delete old or duplicate Bluetooth registrations before scanning again.
- Disconnect the controller from nearby PCs, phones, tablets, or PS4 consoles while pairing.
Which DUALSHOCK 4 features work on PS3?
Basic input is more likely to work than PS3-specific features. Depending on the game and connection method, the following usually function:
- D-pad
- Face buttons
- Shoulder buttons
- Analog sticks
- Basic menu navigation
- Inputs mapped to Start and Select, although the mapping may not be obvious or consistent
Do not treat “usually” as “always.” The PS3 is not seeing a fully native DUALSHOCK 3, and individual games can handle generic controllers differently.
Features that may be unavailable or unreliable
- PS button: Directly connected DUALSHOCK 4 units may not provide the normal PS-button behavior needed to open the XMB, quit a game, or select a user.
- Sixaxis motion: A DUALSHOCK 4 contains motion sensors, but that does not guarantee that the PS3 or a game will accept its motion data.
- Pressure-sensitive buttons: Some PS3 games use variable pressure on face or shoulder buttons, a feature the DUALSHOCK 4 does not provide in the same way.
- Rumble: Vibration should not be assumed when connecting directly. Adapter support varies.
- Touchpad: The PS3 has no normal native touchpad input, so the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad generally has no standard PS3-game function.
- Headset jack and controller audio: Do not assume that the DUALSHOCK 4’s 3.5-mm jack works through the PS3.
- Light bar: Illumination indicates power or activity, not full feature compatibility.

Will a DUALSHOCK 4 work in PS3 games?
It is game-dependent. Games using ordinary digital buttons and analog sticks are more likely to be playable. Games requiring Sixaxis motion, pressure sensitivity, vibration, a PS-button event, or a recognized native controller are more likely to lose functions or reject the controller.

This matters in games involving tilting, steering, balancing, gesture controls, or pressure-sensitive actions. A controller can work in the PS3 menus and still fail when a particular game checks for a required controller feature.
Do not use one successful game as proof that every PS3 game will work. The accurate general rule is: a DUALSHOCK 4 can provide basic input in many PS3 environments, but direct compatibility is not equivalent to using a DUALSHOCK 3.
Can you navigate the PS3 without the DUALSHOCK 4 PS button?
Sometimes, but you should not rely on it. Direct DUALSHOCK 4 connections may leave you unable to use the PS button normally. Keep an original PS3 controller available for account selection, system navigation, recovery tasks, and returning to the XMB.
If the DUALSHOCK 4 works only inside a game, that does not necessarily mean the PS3 has fully recognized it. A converter that emulates a PS3 controller may improve system-level behavior, but button mappings differ by adapter and firmware. There is no universal mapping for the DUALSHOCK 4’s PS, Share, Options, or touchpad controls.

What to do when pairing or input fails
- Confirm that the controller is genuine and charged.
- Try a known-good data micro-USB cable.
- Restart the PS3.
- Delete old or duplicate Bluetooth registrations under Settings → Accessory Settings → Manage Bluetooth Devices.
- Put the DUALSHOCK 4 into pairing mode by holding Share + PS until the light flashes.
- Scan again and select Wireless Controller.
- Test wired operation before retrying Bluetooth.
- Disconnect the controller from nearby PS4s, computers, phones, and tablets.
- Use the small reset button on the rear of the DUALSHOCK 4, then retry.
- Test another game. Failure in one title does not prove total incompatibility.
- If you need reliable PS3 behavior, use a converter or a genuine DUALSHOCK 3.

A converter can translate input from a DUALSHOCK 4 into a format the PS3 handles more consistently. It is worth considering when direct USB or Bluetooth connection is insufficient, but it does not automatically make every feature identical to a DUALSHOCK 3.
Brook Wingman XE 2
The Brook Wingman XE 2 lists PS3 and PS4 compatibility and support for wireless DUALSHOCK 4, PS5, and PS3 controllers. Brook advertises features including button remapping, five turbo levels, firmware updates, and support for more than 125 original or authorized controllers.
It is a sensible choice for someone who wants to use a modern controller across PS3 and PS4. It is unnecessary for someone who only needs occasional basic wired play. Brook’s U.S. store showed a $49.50 price and an out-of-stock status when checked; availability and price can change.
Mayflash MAGIC-S PRO 2
The Mayflash MAGIC-S PRO 2 supports PS3 and lists both wireless and wired DUALSHOCK 4 compatibility. Mayflash advertises rumble support on PS3 while separately limiting some motion-control and touchpad functions by platform.

It suits readers who want one Bluetooth and USB adapter for multiple systems. However, its product information does not establish universal feature parity with a DUALSHOCK 3, particularly for motion- or pressure-sensitive games.
Do not confuse three different products
- USB cable: Connects the DUALSHOCK 4 directly to the PS3.
- Sony DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor: Sony’s documentation presents this primarily for compatible devices such as PCs; it is not established as a general PS3 converter. See Sony’s support page.
- Third-party console converter: Actively translates controller input for systems such as the PS3.
These products are not interchangeable. Avoid an unverified “PS4-to-PS3” dongle that does not publish a PS3 compatibility list or explain its support for rumble, the PS button, motion controls, and other features.
When a genuine DUALSHOCK 3 is the better choice
Choose a genuine DUALSHOCK 3 if you need the lowest-risk option for native PS3 behavior, including the PS button, Sixaxis games, pressure-sensitive controls, vibration, and system navigation.
When buying used or refurbished, check the seller’s return policy, battery condition, analog-stick wear, and whether Sixaxis and rumble work. Counterfeit DUALSHOCK 3 units are common, and a controller that looks correct may omit important features.
A licensed PS3 controller can also be an alternative, but “PS3 compatible” does not necessarily mean feature-complete. Some third-party models omit Sixaxis, pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing, or the PS button.
Which option should you choose?
- Already own a DUALSHOCK 4? Try it with a known-good data-capable USB cable first.
- Need wireless operation for basic games? Try direct Bluetooth pairing and accept that support may vary.
- Need more reliable PS3 functions while using a modern controller? Consider a converter such as the Brook Wingman XE 2 or Mayflash MAGIC-S PRO 2, checking the specific adapter’s feature list and firmware requirements.
- Playing motion-sensitive, pressure-sensitive, or unusually strict games? Prefer a genuine DUALSHOCK 3 unless an adapter explicitly documents the required feature support.
- Do not yet own either controller? A serviceable native PS3 controller is usually simpler and less expensive than buying a modern controller plus an adapter.
Bottom line
A genuine PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 can work on a PS3 through USB and, with the appropriate pairing process, Bluetooth. It is best understood as a partially compatible generic controller, not as a drop-in DUALSHOCK 3 replacement. Use USB for the simplest test, Bluetooth when wireless basic input is enough, a documented converter when you need broader compatibility, and a genuine DUALSHOCK 3 when complete PS3 support matters.
