Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo. A PSP needs the right memory-card format for its model: most PSP systems with a Memory Stick Duo slot use Duo-format media, while PSPgo uses Memory Stick Micro (M2). Standard-size Memory Stick, SD, and microSD cards are not listed as native media in Sony’s compatibility guidance. Check your model before buying, and format a card in the PSP if the system does not recognize it.
Which memory card fits your PSP?
| PSP type | Sony-listed media | Important fit note |
|---|---|---|
| PSP models with a Memory Stick Duo slot covered by Sony’s PSP-E1002/E1003 manual | Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, and Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo | Standard-size Memory Stick cannot be used. The manual also lists Memory Stick Micro (M2) when inserted into an M2 Duo-size adapter. |
| PSPgo | Memory Stick Micro (M2) | PSPgo uses a different card family; Sony describes transferring data from Memory Stick Duo through a PC to PSPgo or M2. |
Sony’s PSP-E1002/E1003 manual lists Memory Stick Duo (with or without MagicGate compatibility), Memory Stick PRO Duo, and Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo as compatible media. It also permits an M2 card in an M2 Duo-size adapter, but warns that inserting M2 directly may make it impossible to eject. See Sony’s PSP-E1002/PSP-E1003 user manual and its compatible-media guidance.
That manual covers the E1002/E1003, so do not treat its list as a complete specification for every PSP revision. Sony’s PSPgo FAQ separately identifies M2 as the PSPgo card type.
Will SD or microSD work?
Not on its own. SD and microSD are not among the formats Sony lists in the cited compatibility guidance. A third-party microSD-to-Memory-Stick Duo adapter may be sold to make a microSD card fit the slot, but Sony’s manual does not validate these adapters or guarantee a particular adapter, card capacity, or setup. Treat that route as unofficial and variable rather than a sure compatibility option.

What to do if the PSP does not recognize the card
- Check the model and card shape. Make sure the card is the appropriate Duo format for a PSP with a Duo slot, or M2 for PSPgo. Do not force a card into the slot.
- Back up anything you need to keep. Formatting erases the data stored on the card.
- Format the card from the PSP. Use System Settings → Format Memory Stick. Sony warns that media formatted on a PC or another device may not be recognized and recommends formatting it using the PSP. See Sony’s Format Memory Stick guide.
Even when a card bears a listed Memory Stick format, Sony says it does not guarantee the performance of all Memory Stick media. A compatible format is therefore not a promise that every card or adapter will work equally well.
Do the 8 GB and 16 GB figures mean there is a capacity limit?
No general capacity limit follows from those figures. Sony’s 2008 PSP system software version 5.01 update note mentions an issue involving download space when 8 GB or 16 GB Memory Stick Duo media was inserted, and says the update resolved it. Those values describe a specific historical software issue; they are not a published maximum-capacity specification for every PSP model.
