ARC Raiders balances PvE and PvP by making both threats shape every expedition: players face lethal ARC machines while knowing other Raiders may become allies—or enemies—before extraction. That mix creates the uncertainty and high stakes the game is built around, but “perfect” is a matter of preference, not a settled verdict. Embark’s own player figures show substantial interest in friendlier play, and its announced PvE matchmaking test is designed to explore that demand.
How PvE and PvP fit into the same expedition
ARC Raiders is an extraction adventure set on a future Earth threatened by mechanized ARC. Raiders prepare in a workshop by crafting, repairing, or upgrading gear, then head topside to scavenge and face machines. Other players are part of the danger: a Raider encountered in the field could cooperate, ignore you, or fight you. The expedition’s choices—what to loot, which encounters to take, and when to leave—are therefore shaped by both AI enemies and human uncertainty.
The game supports solo play and parties of up to three, with online co-op, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer listed on its Steam page. Embark’s official site lists Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW; availability can change over time.
Why the combination can feel balanced
Machines create pressure; Raiders make it unpredictable
ARC enemies provide a shared environmental threat, while the possibility of hostile players changes the meaning of a fight. A machine encounter can draw attention or leave a player exposed, and another Raider’s intentions are not guaranteed. Cooperation can make a dangerous situation manageable; betrayal or a sudden attack can turn it into a high-stakes extraction decision. Embark’s framing emphasizes tension from both machines and other players.

Combat is intended to leave room for a response
In a June 27, 2025 combat-balance blog, Embark combat designer SprinkleMountain described the goal this way: “Our combat is built on beats and flow.” The stated aim was to avoid fights that end so quickly players cannot read what is happening or respond. The studio also discussed weapon range and versatility as balancing concerns, so one option would not crowd out others. Its examples at the time included the Anvil’s long-range performance, shotguns overshadowing SMGs, the Vulcano’s damage, cadence, and range, and Heavy Shields and shield swapping. Those examples document earlier design work, not the state of every weapon in October 2026. Read Embark’s combat-balance blog.
Embark also said, “Your loadout should influence how you move through the world, which fights you take, and how you win them.” That is the connective idea behind the PvPvE loop: equipment and combat choices matter not just against machines, but in how a player handles uncertain encounters with other Raiders.

Is ARC Raiders more PvE or PvP?
It is fundamentally PvPvE rather than a game that cleanly favors one side. Machines are an essential part of the expedition, but the potential for player conflict is also built into the risk. Whether it feels more like PvE or PvP depends partly on what a player wants from an extraction game and how often they encounter other Raiders.
Embark’s September 24, 2026 announcement divided players by preferred style into 37% friendly co-op, 27% mixed play, and 34% pure PvP. Those are developer-reported shares, and together they total 98%; the announcement does not explain the remainder or provide a full survey methodology. They should be read as evidence of different player preferences, not an exhaustive or independently verified breakdown. See Embark’s announcement.

Can you play without fighting other players?
Embark announced a limited PvE matchmaking test for October 13–20, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that test had not started, so its outcomes were not yet known. During the announced test, players could toggle between classic PvPvE matchmaking and PvE matchmaking. PvE sessions were to have zero player-to-player damage, with solos, duos, and trios placed together; PvPvE matchmaking rating would remain unaffected.
The test was not simply classic play with Raiders made harmless. Embark said Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate, and Frigate would be excluded, and overall loot value would be lowered to account for PvE’s relative safety. The toggle was planned to be removed after the test while the studio considered player feedback and data. No exact reduction in loot value was stated.

| Experience | Threats and tension | Rewards and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Classic PvPvE | ARC machines and the possibility of hostile Raiders; player encounters remain unpredictable. | Standard PvPvE matchmaking; the announcement did not specify a comparative loot-value figure. |
| Announced PvE test | ARC machines and cooperative Raiders, with zero player-to-player damage. Embark said machine behavior would be adjusted to retain some tension. | Lower overall loot value than the safer PvE experience would otherwise warrant; solos, duos, and trios together; Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate, and Frigate excluded. Scheduled for October 13–20, 2026. |
Why the balance is a trade-off, not a universal sweet spot
The same uncertainty that makes PvPvE compelling can frustrate players who want cooperative survival without the risk of being attacked by other people. In its September 2026 announcement, Embark said more than 70% of friendly players and 40% of PvP players wanted fewer hostile encounters; 51% of surveyed players expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. These figures are Embark’s reported findings, not an independently verified poll, and the cited announcement does not set out full methodology.
Embark has acknowledged the design tension: removing the PvP threat may also remove some of the pressure the original experience was built around. The test is therefore a way to examine whether a safer cooperative option can serve players with different preferences; it is not proof that the existing mix satisfies everyone, nor evidence that PvE matchmaking would become permanent.

Verdict: a strong PvPvE design for players who want uncertainty
ARC Raiders has a coherent reason to mix PvE and PvP: machines make the world dangerous, while other players make encounters hard to predict. Its combat philosophy aims to give players time and tools to respond, and its extraction loop makes those threats relevant to decisions about fighting, looting, and leaving. That is a persuasive balance for players who enjoy tension created by both AI and human opponents. It is not a perfect fit for every audience, as Embark’s own preference figures and planned PvE test make clear.
