Yes. Arc Raiders has used text-to-speech (TTS) alongside recordings by human actors, particularly for some variable lines such as item names, locations, compass directions and pings. That does not mean every voice—or all of the game’s content—is AI-generated. In March 2026, Embark said it had re-recorded some lines with human actors, while selected licensed TTS use remained.
What does Arc Raiders use AI for?
Embark has described a mix of recorded performances and TTS. The studio’s chief creative officer and co-founder, Stefan Strandberg, said, “We use a combination of recordings of real actors and TTS,” and framed the approach as a way for a small team to build a richer game world. Design director Virgil Watkins described TTS as useful for lines that need to change or expand as the game adds content. - Not established: The cited reporting does not provide a complete list of TTS lines, identify every performer, disclose contract terms or give a precise share of the game’s audio made with TTS.
- Not implied: The evidence does not support saying that all Arc Raiders dialogue, all character voices or the entire game was generated by AI.
Are the Arc Raiders voices AI or real actors?
Both. Some audio was recorded by human actors, and some lines were generated through TTS. The distinction matters: a TTS line can be based on a voice actor’s performance or voice model without being a fresh recording of that actor speaking each specific line. Embark’s representatives described the actors’ involvement and licensing, but the reports do not show individual agreements or the performers’ own accounts.

There is also a terminology dispute. Embark representatives distinguished its use of TTS from other kinds of generative AI, while critics and coverage have questioned whether a system that produces new speech from an actor-derived model is itself generative. The available statements describe the technology and its use, but do not settle that broader definition.
What did Arc Raiders disclose about AI?
PC Gamer reproduced the game’s Steam disclosure as it appeared around launch: “During the development process, we may use procedural- and AI-based tools to assist with content creation. In all such cases, the final product reflects the creativity and expression of our own development team.” The wording is broad: it does not identify specific shipped assets or explain which voice lines used TTS. Did Arc Raiders replace its AI voice lines?
Not entirely, according to Embark’s CEO Patrick Söderlund. In comments reported on March 13, 2026, he said the studio had re-recorded some lines with human voices after launch and acknowledged a quality difference: “A real professional actor is better than AI; that’s just how it is.” The report said the game had fewer AI voice lines than it did at its October 2025 launch, but did not give a remaining count. Why is Arc Raiders’ use of AI controversial?
The disagreement is not a single yes-or-no question. It involves performance, permission, paid work and disclosure—and the evidence does not answer each one equally.
Performance quality
Synthetic speech can make frequently changing or combinable lines easier to produce, but players may find that it lacks the expressive detail and natural delivery of a performed line. Söderlund himself said a professional actor sounds better. Embark’s post-launch re-recordings show that the studio changed some lines, but the reporting does not specify which lines or establish that all players evaluate them the same way.

Consent and licensing
Embark’s reported position is that actors were involved and selected TTS use was licensed. That is relevant to whether the studio says it had permission, but the cited reports do not disclose individual contracts, compensation or the actors’ own views. Those details should not be presented as independently verified.
Paid acting opportunities
Supporters can see TTS as a practical way to voice a growing list of item and location names without repeatedly scheduling new sessions. Critics argue that those lines could instead be paid recording work. That is a debate about the effects and values of the choice, not evidence in these reports of a measured number of jobs lost.

What counts as generative AI—and what was disclosed
Embark’s representatives distinguished TTS from generative AI in other content areas. Critics have questioned that distinction because TTS produces new speech. Meanwhile, the Steam disclosure covered procedural and AI-based tools broadly, without identifying specific assets. The terminology and disclosure therefore do not by themselves settle what audio was generated or whether the approach was acceptable to players.
