Yes. Backbone Pro works as a USB-C handheld controller with compatible phones, and as a standalone Bluetooth or wired gamepad with supported tablets, PCs, Macs, and other devices. The key exception: iPhone 14 and earlier have Lightning ports, so they cannot use the Pro’s mounted, wired phone connection; Bluetooth is their alternative. A compatible device is only part of the equation—the game or service must also support controllers.
Backbone Pro compatibility at a glance
| Device or use | USB-C wired | Bluetooth | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C iPhone | Yes, in handheld mode | Yes | Backbone names iPhone 15, 16, and 17 series. Check your specific model and iOS version. |

| Android phone | Usually, if the phone supports USB OTG and fits | Yes | Backbone lists Android 10 or later and popular USB-C devices from Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, Realme, and Motorola. USB-C alone does not guarantee compatibility. |
| iPad or Android tablet | Yes, with a suitable cable | Yes | Typically used as a standalone gamepad, not mounted between the phone grips. Backbone documents wired play on other screens. |
| PC or Mac | Yes, with a suitable cable | Yes | Works with controller-compatible games and services; recognition and Bluetooth behavior can vary. |
| Smart TV, Apple TV, or other Bluetooth host | Not as a mounted device | Where the host supports compatible Bluetooth controllers | Compatibility depends on the TV or device, its software, and the game or app. |
| Xbox or PlayStation | Not established as universal direct console pairing | Not established as universal direct console pairing | Remote play and cloud gaming are different from pairing the Backbone Pro directly to a console. |
Backbone describes its FlowState feature as supporting movement among phones, tablets, PCs, Macs, smart TVs, and other screens. That broad claim covers different connection methods; it does not mean every device mounts in the grips or every game works automatically. See the Backbone Pro product page.
How phone compatibility works
USB-C iPhones and Android phones
In handheld mode, the phone sits between the grips and connects through the controller’s USB-C connector. Backbone specifically names the iPhone 15, 16, and 17 series. For Android, its compatibility FAQ lists Android 10 or later and devices from several major manufacturers, but recommends checking the exact model. A phone must support controller input and the appropriate USB accessory or OTG behavior for wired play.
Lightning iPhones and the iOS-version discrepancy
iPhone 14 and earlier models with Lightning cannot plug into the Pro’s USB-C handheld connection. Backbone says they can connect over Bluetooth instead, with some Backbone app functions unavailable in that setup.

Backbone’s official pages disagree about the iOS minimum: its phone compatibility FAQ says iOS 17.3 or later, while its Pro FAQ says iOS 15 or later. Neither statement resolves the conflict. Confirm your model and software version with Backbone before buying rather than assuming the lower requirement applies.
Cases and fit
The Pro includes magnetic adapters intended to help fit compatible phones and cases, but that does not guarantee a fit for every case. Check whether the case, raised camera area, or port position prevents the phone from seating securely or the USB-C connector from aligning. A thick rugged, wallet, or battery case may need to be removed. Backbone’s Pro FAQ includes case-compatibility information.
Using Backbone Pro with tablets
For an iPad or Android tablet, think of the Pro as a separate gamepad: pair it over Bluetooth or connect it to the tablet with a suitable USB-C cable. Tablets generally are not held in the phone grip, so “tablet compatible” does not mean phone-style handheld mounting.

Backbone documents Play On Any Screen wired connections for iPad, tablets, Mac, and PC, and has a Pro-specific wired setup guide. Use a data-capable cable; a cable that only supplies power may not pass controller input.

The Pro can act as a conventional gamepad on a computer through Bluetooth or USB-C. Potential uses include Steam games, Steam Link, cloud gaming, remote play from a gaming PC, and other controller-enabled software. The game or service must recognize gamepad input; keyboard-and-mouse titles may need manual mapping or may not support a controller well.
USB-C is a practical fallback if Bluetooth pairing or recognition is unreliable. An independent TechRadar review reported working use with Steam and other devices but also unreliable Bluetooth behavior on a PC in some cases. That is a reported risk, not proof of a universal fault. Backbone’s wired Play On Any Screen guide covers PC and Mac.

Xbox, PlayStation, and game support
Native mobile games
On iOS or Android, the game itself must support controller input. Backbone Pro can provide the controls, but it cannot add full gamepad support to a touchscreen-only game.
Cloud gaming
The controller can be used with compatible cloud-gaming services, including Xbox cloud gaming where the service, device, game, account, and any required subscription support it. A stable internet connection is also necessary; controller compatibility does not guarantee a playable streaming session.

Remote play versus direct console pairing
With remote play, an app running on a phone, tablet, Mac, or PC streams a console session, and the Backbone Pro controls that client device. This is not the same as pairing the controller directly with an Xbox or PlayStation console. Backbone promotes Xbox and PlayStation streaming and remote play on its product page, but universal direct console compatibility is not established.

Wired or Bluetooth: which should you use?
| Connection | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C handheld | Playing on a compatible phone mounted in the grips | Direct connection designed for low latency; no controller battery is needed for wired play. Requires physical USB-C compatibility and a case fit that allows the connector to seat. |
| USB-C wired to another screen | Tablets, PCs, and Macs when you want a cable connection | Requires a suitable data-capable cable and a host that recognizes the controller. |
| Bluetooth | Using the controller separately with a tablet, computer, TV, or other supported host | Requires charging and pairing; host and game support vary. Some Backbone app features are unavailable when connected to a phone over Bluetooth. |
Backbone advertises up to 40 hours of wireless battery life, describing the figure as an estimate based on internal testing; actual results may vary. Wired mode is intended to reduce connection latency, but total delay also depends on the device, game, network, and streaming service. Details are on Backbone’s Pro launch page.
Is Backbone+ required?
No subscription is required to use the Pro as a gamepad. Backbone says basic controller play and wired Play On Any Screen use do not require Backbone+. The free Backbone App can support functions such as firmware updates and controller configuration; Backbone+ adds software features including a unified game-management experience, recommendations, app features, and perks. Exact app features can vary by connection, operating system, region, and software version. See the Backbone Pro FAQ and wired-use instructions.
Setup and troubleshooting
Connect a USB-C phone
- Check Backbone’s compatibility information for your phone model and operating system.
- Remove or adjust the case if it blocks the connector or prevents the phone from sitting securely.
- Expand the controller, position the phone in the grips, and align its USB-C port.
- Seat the phone without forcing the connector, then open a game or service that supports controllers.
- If the game does not respond, try without the case, restart the game, check for a firmware update, and test another controller-compatible title.
Connect wirelessly to a tablet, PC, Mac, or TV
- Charge the controller and put it into Bluetooth pairing mode using its pairing control.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the host device and select the Backbone controller.
- Launch a game or service that supports gamepads and check its input settings if controls do not respond.
- If recognition remains unreliable, reconnect the controller or try USB-C wired mode.
The exact pairing-button sequence can depend on the current controller instructions; consult Backbone’s current guidance if you need button-by-button steps.

- Connect the Pro’s external USB-C port to the tablet, Mac, or PC with a suitable data-capable cable.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the controller, then open a compatible game or service.
- If it is not detected, reconnect it, try a different data cable, and test Bluetooth as a fallback.
Common reasons a connected controller seems not to work
- The game does not support controllers or requires controller input to be selected in its settings.
- The game was already open and needs to be restarted after the controller connects.
- A case is preventing a reliable physical connection.
- A cable carries power but not data.
- The host recognizes the controller, but the particular app or game does not.
Is Backbone Pro worth it for your setup?
The US Backbone product page listed the Pro at $169.99 during the cited product-page snapshot, though it also showed “Sold out”; stock and prices can change. Apple listed it at $169.95 on its page at the time captured. Backbone’s product lineup listed Backbone One from $99.99. These are dated page observations, not guaranteed current prices. Compare the Pro product page, product lineup, and Backbone comparison.
The Pro’s case is strongest when you will use its different connection modes, not just its phone grip. Its larger design, Bluetooth operation, internal battery, rear buttons, and cross-screen workflow are most relevant to people who move between a USB-C phone and other screens.
Quick Recap
- Consider it if you want one controller for a compatible USB-C phone and wireless or wired play on a tablet, PC, Mac, or TV.
- Compare cheaper options if you mainly want a phone-mounted controller and do not need the Pro’s standalone Bluetooth workflow.
- Look elsewhere if you have a Lightning-only iPhone and need wired handheld play, expect universal direct console pairing, or want a conventional full-size PC or console controller.
