Better airflow can help prevent ventilation problems, but it is not a proven way to raise a normally operating PS5 Slim’s frame rates or make it quieter. Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster and sound louder in some games and applications; its guidance is to keep vents clear and remove dust, not to add a cooling accessory.
Does extra cooling make the PS5 Slim faster?
There is no official evidence that an external cooler or improved airflow increases a normally operating PS5 Slim’s frame rate or game performance. Keeping vents clear can help the console ventilate as intended, but Sony does not present ventilation maintenance as a performance upgrade.
Sony’s guidance is general PS5 support advice, not a controlled performance test of the Slim. Sony’s Slim safety documentation also does not evaluate aftermarket coolers. No dependable controlled comparison establishing a frame-rate gain from a PS5 Slim cooling accessory is available in the sources cited here.
Can better airflow make it quieter?
Not necessarily. Sony explains that louder fan operation can be normal in some games and applications: “This is normal and simply means that the fan is temporarily working at a faster rate to cool the system more effectively.” The fan may therefore become more audible as the console responds to its workload.

Clear vents and sensible placement can prevent airflow obstruction, but Sony does not promise that those steps—or an add-on fan or cooling stand—will reduce noise. The available official guidance does not include a Slim-specific noise comparison, and the sources cited here do not establish a reliable controlled test showing that an external cooler makes the console quieter. An accessory’s own fan can also add noise.
How to improve ventilation safely
Sony’s placement guidance is to leave at least 10 cm of clear space around the console. Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed; avoid long-fiber carpet and narrow or cramped spaces. Do not cover the console with cloth, and do not let dust build up around its vents.

Clean dust from the vents
- Turn off the console and disconnect its AC power cable before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust from and around the vents, following Sony’s PS5 noise and ventilation guidance.
Sony recommends a low-powered vacuum; it does not require a handheld model or a special console-cleaning product. If you already have a suitable vacuum, there is no need to buy one for a performance boost.

Routine fan noise during some games is not, by itself, proof of a fault. If the console behaves abnormally, makes unusual sounds or smells, or becomes too hot to touch, stop using it and unplug it, as directed in Sony’s instruction manuals. Do not rely on an aftermarket cooler to address abnormal symptoms.
