What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. Castr can relay a live feed to YouTube, but it cannot keep that feed going if your only internet connection goes down. The video must first reach Castr from an encoder or other live source; choosing YouTube as a destination does not create an independent source or network connection.
Why a Castr stream stops when your internet goes off
The route is encoder or live source → Castr → YouTube. If your internet connection fails, your source cannot send video to Castr over that connection. Castr therefore has no live input to relay. Its YouTube connection is a destination setting, not a replacement for the incoming feed. Castr’s setup documentation describes connecting a source and then publishing to destinations such as YouTube (Castr’s YouTube connection guide; Castr’s live-stream guide).
What Castr’s backup options do—and do not do
Backup ingest handles a second encoder feed
Castr’s backup ingest can switch to a backup stream if the primary stream is interrupted, but it requires a second encoder sending to the backup ingest endpoint. Castr advises matching the encoders’ output settings and enabling adaptive bitrate transcoding for seamless switching. This is useful for certain encoder or source failures, provided the backup feed can still reach Castr; it does not supply a second internet connection. If both encoders depend on the same failed connection, neither can deliver video. See Castr’s backup ingest guide.
A backup VOD is fallback content, not proof of a continuing YouTube event
Castr’s live-stream guide lists a backup VOD that can play if live input drops. That documents fallback content within Castr’s setup; it does not establish that a complete loss of your internet will preserve an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast or that the prerecorded video will appear on YouTube as part of the same event. Castr also offers cloud recording when enabled, which retains a broadcast but does not replace a missing live source (Castr’s live-stream guide).

Stream-down alerts notify; they do not restore the feed
Castr documents SMS alerts for stream-down events caused by network issues, encoder problems, or other causes. Its July 2026 help article lists eligibility for Premium-or-higher plans, with named legacy-plan exceptions, and a limit of 20 messages per month on eligible plans. Plan terms may change, so check Castr’s current SMS alert details. An alert can tell you something failed; it cannot bring the source back online.
How to reduce interruptions before going live
These steps can reduce instability, but none can bridge a total internet outage. Castr’s recommendations below are vendor guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will perform reliably.

- Prefer wired Ethernet. Castr says Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes, and recommends wired connectivity for greater reliability.
- Allow upload headroom. Castr recommends upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate. Its example is 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) of upload for a 5,000 Kbps stream.
- Check stream health. Use Castr’s health charts to look for instability. For persistent problems, Castr suggests trying another ingest server or SRT; these may help with a weak or unstable link, not an offline one.
- Test before the broadcast. Castr recommends testing the stream before going live; see its pre-broadcast testing guide.
For a full outage, continuity requires an available path for a source to reach the service—for example, a genuinely independent network path. The cited Castr documentation does not establish a general guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event running after all incoming feeds stop.
Do not confuse disabled playback with an internet outage
Castr’s “Disable Playback” feature concerns its public player. Castr says recording can continue and configured destinations, including YouTube, can still receive the stream. That is different from disabling your internet connection or stopping the source feed. See Castr’s Disable Playback explanation.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel playing prerecorded videos, rather than a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a way to broadcast a live camera feed. Start your free StreamNeo day.
