Yes—Blizzard documented a DirectStorage setting in Diablo IV for PC, but that does not guarantee dramatically faster loading. In its May 27, 2025 Patch 2.2 notes, Blizzard said it was disabling the setting while investigating performance issues and explained how Battle.net players could turn it back on. The note refers to faster loading on supported NVMe drives, but gives no Diablo IV benchmark and does not establish the setting’s default in later builds.
What Blizzard confirmed about DirectStorage
Blizzard’s Patch 2.2 notes dated May 27, 2025 state: “We are disabling the DirectStorage setting to investigate performance issues.” The same note says players who want to continue using it for faster load times on supported NVMe drives can re-enable it.
This is stronger evidence than a data-mining claim alone that a DirectStorage setting existed in the PC game. It does not establish who first discovered the feature through data mining, when that discovery happened, or whether any mined files demonstrated a complete, active implementation.
How to re-enable it in Battle.net
Blizzard’s Patch 2.2 instructions were for the Battle.net launcher. The setting and launcher behavior may differ in later game builds, so treat this as the procedure documented for that patch, not a guarantee that the option remains unchanged.

- Open the game’s settings and enable the option to use additional command line arguments.
- Enter
-enabledsas the command line argument.
Blizzard described this as a way to continue using DirectStorage after it disabled the setting while investigating performance issues. The note does not say that every player should enable it or that doing so improves performance in every configuration.
Does Diablo IV require an NVMe SSD?
No specific NVMe model or speed is established as a Diablo IV requirement. Blizzard’s published PC requirements list an SSD with 90 GB of available space across the listed performance tiers. That is the game’s stated PC storage baseline; it is not a requirement to buy an NVMe drive. These are Windows PC specifications, not console storage requirements.

Blizzard’s DirectStorage note refers specifically to “supported NVMe drives.” It does not say that every SSD supports the feature, identify a required NVMe speed, or quantify the loading improvement. The baseline SSD requirement and the optional DirectStorage/NVMe reference answer different questions.
Will an NVMe SSD make Diablo IV load faster?
Blizzard’s wording suggests faster load times are an intended benefit when DirectStorage is used with supported NVMe drives, but its note provides no measured Diablo IV result. There is no sourced, controlled comparison here that establishes how much faster Diablo IV loads on NVMe versus another SSD—or whether a particular upgrade will be noticeable in your setup.

AMD’s March 2023 DirectStorage presentation explains technical mechanisms such as batching I/O requests, reducing context switches and system calls, and GPU decompression in relevant workflows. Its demo results are not Diablo IV benchmarks; AMD cautions that actual results may vary, and performance depends on the workload and device.

If your PC does not already have enough SSD space for the game, an internal SSD may address that capacity need. If you are considering NVMe specifically, first check motherboard compatibility and available M.2 slots, then choose capacity and performance appropriate to your broader workload. The cited Diablo IV sources do not rank drives or specify an NVMe speed target.

Do not treat an NVMe purchase as a guaranteed Diablo IV loading-time upgrade. The official note supports the existence of the feature setting and Blizzard’s stated intended benefit on supported drives; it does not promise a result for every PC.
