No: Bethesda does not list OpenGL 4.6 as a requirement for DOOM (2016). The PC game offers OpenGL and Vulkan as alternative graphics APIs. OpenGL 4.6 is a Khronos specification released after the game, not a special DOOM edition or a named minimum requirement. If both renderers are available, choose based on which runs more smoothly and reliably on your PC.
What “OpenGL 4.6 and DOOM 2016” means
The useful question is whether your PC can run DOOM (2016)’s OpenGL renderer or its Vulkan renderer—not whether the game is “OpenGL 4.6.” OpenGL is a graphics API; OpenGL 4.6 is one version of its specification. Vulkan is a separate graphics and compute API, not a newer OpenGL version.

Khronos released OpenGL 4.6 and GLSL 4.60 on July 31, 2017. DOOM’s Vulkan support arrived through a later game update in 2016. That timeline alone does not establish the exact OpenGL context the game requests, and Bethesda’s documentation identifies support for OpenGL without naming version 4.6 as a requirement. OpenGL 4.6 is also distinct from GLSL 4.60, the associated shading-language specification. A driver may report support for a particular OpenGL version, but that number by itself does not tell you which version a game requests, whether every relevant driver feature works correctly, or how well the game will perform. Khronos keeps the API and shader specifications in its OpenGL registry.

DOOM (2016)’s PC requirements
Bethesda’s published minimum requirements do not name an OpenGL version. They specify 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, or 10; an Intel Core i5-2400 or AMD FX-8320; 8 GB of RAM; and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 GB, plus 55 GB of free storage, Steam, and broadband. The recommended graphics cards are in the GTX 970/Radeon R9 290 class, with an Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD FX-8350 and 8 GB of RAM. Consult Bethesda’s official PC specifications for the published list.
Those model-based requirements are a more useful baseline than a driver’s maximum OpenGL version. A GPU can expose OpenGL 4.6 and still be too slow, have insufficient video memory, or suffer from a driver or game-specific issue. Conversely, the absence of OpenGL 4.6 does not by itself prove the game cannot run: Bethesda does not state that version as the threshold. Compatibility and playable performance are separate questions.
Bethesda also says the addition of Vulkan did not change DOOM’s minimum PC specifications. Vulkan is an alternative renderer, not a new requirement for every player. Bethesda’s note on Vulkan and minimum specifications covers that point.

OpenGL versus Vulkan: which should you use?
There is no universal winner. Vulkan gives applications more explicit control over graphics work and can reduce CPU overhead in some situations; OpenGL is a higher-level, established API that can be a useful fallback. Those general design differences do not guarantee that Vulkan will deliver more frames in DOOM on every PC. The result depends on the GPU, CPU, driver, resolution, settings, laptop GPU selection, and stability of the particular configuration.

Compare both in the same scene and at the same resolution and settings. Pay attention to stuttering and frame-time consistency as well as average frame rate. A renderer that reports a higher average but frequently hitches or crashes may be the worse choice for play. Avoid treating unsourced claims such as “Vulkan is always faster” as a benchmark.
How to switch between the graphics APIs
- Launch DOOM and open Settings.
- Open Advanced Settings, then find Graphics API.
- Select OpenGL or Vulkan and confirm the change. The game restarts to apply it.
Bethesda also says Steam may prompt you to choose OpenGL or Vulkan when you launch the game. These are the documented paths in its API selection instructions. If the game will not start far enough to reach its settings, use the Steam launch choice if offered; do not assume an old command-line flag will work with every build.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Vulkan is unavailable or will not launch
- Check whether the GPU supports Vulkan and install the appropriate current driver from the GPU maker.
- Try launching with OpenGL. If OpenGL works, that gives you a fallback while you investigate Vulkan compatibility.
- If the game used to launch and now crashes, select OpenGL through the launch prompt or in-game menu if accessible.
- In Steam, verify the game files. Check that antivirus or firewall software is not blocking the game executable.
Bethesda’s launch-crash guidance includes driver updates, file verification, GPU selection, and security-software checks. A Vulkan crash does not by itself prove that the GPU can never use Vulkan; driver state and other configuration problems can also matter.

- Confirm DOOM is running on the intended GPU, especially on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Update the graphics driver, then test the other graphics API.
- Lower the resolution and adjust anti-aliasing to see whether the frame rate improves.
- Temporarily disable overlays or third-party tuning tools, then compare performance again.
Bethesda’s PC performance guidance includes trying Vulkan, lowering resolution, and changing anti-aliasing. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helps rather than assuming the API is the only cause.
A laptop is using integrated graphics
Use the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD graphics-control software to select DOOMx64.exe and assign the high-performance GPU. Plug in the laptop, choose a high-performance power profile, and relaunch. The game crashes to desktop without an error
Bethesda advises checking Windows Event Viewer for DOOMx64.exe and noting the faulting module. As diagnostic tests, disable SLI or CrossFire, use one monitor, select the intended GPU, revert overclocks, verify Steam files, and update drivers. These steps help isolate possible causes; no single one is a guaranteed fix. See Bethesda’s no-error crash guidance.

A graphics card may support OpenGL but not Vulkan, may require a particular driver for Vulkan, or may support either API yet lack the performance needed for smooth play. Do not treat API availability as proof that a PC meets the game’s performance needs.

Bethesda’s Vulkan compatibility guidance documented exceptions involving NVIDIA GPUs with 2 GB of memory on Windows 7 and the GTX 690, directing those users to OpenGL. This is an older, specific support note, not a rule that every GTX 690 or every 2 GB NVIDIA card on a modern Windows installation is necessarily unable to run Vulkan. Check the applicable GPU and driver support rather than generalizing that historical caveat. Bethesda’s compatibility note describes the limitation.
Quick decision guide
- Vulkan is missing: update the graphics driver, check GPU support, or use OpenGL.
- Both APIs work: test them under the same conditions and choose the one with better stability, frame pacing, and performance.
- Vulkan crashes or renders incorrectly: switch back to OpenGL and troubleshoot drivers and game files.
- Both perform badly: confirm the game is using the discrete GPU, then compare your system with Bethesda’s requirements and reduce demanding settings.
In short, seeing “OpenGL 4.6” in a driver report is not a DOOM compatibility certificate, and lacking that exact label is not evidence that DOOM requires an upgrade. The game’s practical choice is between its OpenGL and Vulkan renderers.
