Dragon Age: The Veilguard puts a leader, seven companions and their personal stories at the center of its single-player RPG. Whether that adds up to the character drama many players associate with BioWare is less clear: reviewers disagree sharply about the writing and cast. The fairest answer is that the game is built for companion-focused storytelling, but its success depends on whether its characters and choices work for you.
What kind of character drama does The Veilguard aim for?
EA describes The Veilguard as a single-player, character-driven RPG. You play Rook, who leads seven companions, each with a story of their own. That premise makes the team more than a backdrop: companion quests and other side content can affect how later stages unfold, according to EA’s pre-play guide.
That establishes the game’s design priorities, not whether the drama lands. A large cast and personal quests are ingredients; characterization, dialogue, relationship development and the consequences of choices determine whether they feel compelling. The available reviews reach different conclusions on those points.
Why do reviews disagree about the story and characters?
PC Gamer’s review is sharply critical of the story and characters, making the case that the game does not deliver the quality of character writing the series’ reputation can lead players to expect. GameSpot’s review frames it as a return to form, while also pointing out that each Dragon Age entry changes the series in its own way.

Those positions are not a simple vote on whether the game contains companions or personal quests; it clearly does. They reflect different judgments about how well the writing, relationships and story work. The useful question is not whether The Veilguard recreates an earlier game exactly, but whether its own cast and choices provide the kind of sustained party drama you want.
What should players look for in its companion storytelling?
Companion stories are woven into progression rather than being merely decorative. EA says companion quests and side content influence how later stages unfold, but that does not mean every side quest is mandatory. If you are interested in the cast, pursuing companion quests is the clearest way to engage with that part of the design and see the stories the game gives its team.

The game also gives players choices about how to approach Rook. BioWare identifies three classes—Warrior, Mage and Rogue—and says choosing a faction unlocks different narrative, dialogue and gameplay interactions. These systems offer distinct ways to shape a character and their place in the world, but the available sources do not establish that every decision has major or lasting consequences.
Is it a return to the BioWare style?
There is no single objective test for “BioWare character drama.” For a useful comparison, consider how well the companions are characterized and developed, whether relationships and choices feel consequential, how dialogue and party dynamics contribute to the story, and whether companion quests fit naturally alongside the main plot. It also matters whether combat and mission structure leave room for those character moments rather than interrupting them.
On the evidence available, The Veilguard clearly centers a companion team and character-focused storytelling, while the critical disagreement shows that this design does not guarantee a universally convincing result. Players looking for a return to form may find GameSpot’s assessment persuasive; those who prioritize the sharper criticisms of the writing may side with PC Gamer. Neither review turns a subjective judgment into a settled fact about the game.
