A routine NVIDIA driver update installs the newer driver over the existing one. If you choose Custom (Advanced) → Perform a clean installation, the installer instead resets driver settings and removes traces of the previous installation. You normally do not need to uninstall a working driver before updating.
GeForce Experience and the NVIDIA driver are different things
GeForce Experience is a companion application for driver management and features such as game optimization and the in-game overlay. The NVIDIA display driver is the software Windows and games use to communicate with the GPU. Uninstalling the companion app does not, by itself, mean the display driver has been removed.
| Component | What it does | What uninstalling GeForce Experience does |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App | Companion features, driver notifications and downloads, and related tools | Removes the application and the features it provides; it does not automatically uninstall the display driver. |
| NVIDIA display driver | Enables Windows and applications to use the NVIDIA GPU | Normally remains installed unless you separately remove or replace it. |
| NVIDIA Control Panel | Provides graphics settings | Its installation and availability depend on the driver package and installation path. |
| Optional NVIDIA components | May include audio, PhysX, or other features, depending on hardware and package | Removal depends on the components installed and the uninstall or installation choices. |
NVIDIA App and the GPU driver are related but separable parts of NVIDIA’s software offering; see NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App announcement.
What a normal driver update does
NVIDIA’s guidance is that you generally do not need to uninstall an older driver before installing a newer one. The standard update replaces or updates the active driver package while aiming to preserve NVIDIA Control Panel settings and profiles. That is why “the old driver is replaced” is more accurate than “every trace of the old driver is erased.” See NVIDIA’s driver FAQ.

Windows or NVIDIA software may retain installation material, logs, cached files, or data that can help with recovery. What remains varies with Windows, the GPU and driver package, the installation method, and whether you chose a clean installation. A leftover installer folder does not mean two NVIDIA display drivers are active at once, and there is no single folder-by-folder rule that applies to every PC.
During installation, the screen may flicker, briefly go blank, or switch resolution while Windows changes drivers. NVIDIA documents these temporary display changes in its installation guidance.

What “Perform a clean installation” changes
The clean-install option is separate from uninstalling GeForce Experience. NVIDIA describes it as removing traces of the previous driver installation, including driver history, and resetting prior settings or profiles. That can also remove the immediately available rollback target. NVIDIA notes that rollback can resume only from the second driver installed after a clean installation; see its clean-installation and rollback FAQ. NVIDIA’s installer documentation identifies the clean-install checkbox under Custom installation.
Choose a clean installation when a routine reinstall has not fixed an installation problem, when settings appear corrupted, or when persistent graphics problems began after a driver change. It is usually unnecessary for a stable PC receiving a routine update. Since it resets settings and may affect rollback, note any custom profiles you rely on before proceeding.

How to update normally
- Get the driver through NVIDIA App or the official NVIDIA driver-download page. Select a package that matches your GPU and Windows installation.
- Save work and close games and other demanding GPU applications. If an overlay or monitoring utility appears to interfere, close it for the installation.
- Run the NVIDIA installer and choose the normal or Express installation for a routine update.
- Let the installer finish, even if the display briefly flickers, goes blank, or changes resolution.
- Restart if the installer requests it. Check the driver version in NVIDIA App, NVIDIA Control Panel’s system information where available, or Windows Device Manager.
How to run a clean installation
- Download the driver for your GPU and Windows version from NVIDIA, or start the installation through NVIDIA App.
- Run the installer and approve Windows’ administrator prompt if one appears.
- Choose Custom (Advanced), rather than Express. The exact labels can vary between installer versions.
- Select the components you want, then enable Perform a clean installation.
- Continue with the installation and allow for temporary display changes. Restart if prompted, then reapply any graphics settings or profiles you need.
If you have a laptop, keep its manufacturer’s NVIDIA driver available before replacing it. OEM packages may be tailored for that model’s display switching, power management, brightness controls, or external displays; the suitability of a generic driver depends on the particular laptop.
Can you roll back after an update?
Sometimes. Rollback depends on whether Windows or NVIDIA’s software still has a suitable previous driver available and how the current driver was installed.

- Device Manager: Windows may offer a previous-driver option if it retained the package. NVIDIA documents the rollback process in its notebook driver instructions; the option is not guaranteed to appear on every system.
- NVIDIA App: It can provide rollback or reinstall targets among drivers it recognizes. NVIDIA says manually installed drivers may not be identified as rollback targets; see its NVIDIA App feature announcement.
- Manual driver installation: If rollback is unavailable, download an archived NVIDIA driver that matches the GPU and Windows version. Laptop users should also consider whether the OEM package is needed.
A clean installation removes previous driver history, so do not choose it if preserving an immediate rollback option is important.

Start with a restart and a compatible installer
- Restart Windows, then try the installer again.
- Confirm that the package matches the exact GPU and Windows version.
- Close utilities that may interfere, such as overclocking, monitoring, RGB, or overlay tools. Avoid broadly disabling security software; investigate a specific conflict instead.
- For an OEM laptop, try the manufacturer’s driver if NVIDIA’s generic package causes model-specific problems.
NVIDIA’s installation hints discuss possible interference from download accelerators and virus-protection software. Treat security changes cautiously and only as targeted troubleshooting.

Retry with a clean installation
If the normal installer still fails, run it again and use Custom (Advanced) → Perform a clean installation. This is more disruptive than an Express update because it resets settings and removes prior driver history.
Use manual removal only when needed
If the NVIDIA installer cannot recover, Windows Device Manager or Installed Apps may help remove the relevant NVIDIA component before reinstalling the correct driver. This is not the preferred procedure for routine updates, and removing the wrong component can add unnecessary troubleshooting.
Reserve third-party cleanup for last-resort cases
A specialist utility such as Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is an advanced community troubleshooting option for situations such as repeated failed clean installs or a GPU-vendor change—not a required step for normal NVIDIA updates. Before using one, create a restore point and save the correct driver installer locally. Aggressive cleanup can remove more than intended, and Windows may temporarily fall back to Microsoft’s basic display driver. Download a cleanup utility only from its developer’s official site.
What happens if you uninstall GeForce Experience?
Uninstalling GeForce Experience removes that companion app and the features it supplies, which can include its driver notifications and downloads, automatic game optimization, and overlay or recording functions. It does not automatically remove the NVIDIA display driver, so GPU display output should continue to work if that driver remains installed.
GeForce Experience has a successor
NVIDIA released NVIDIA App on November 12, 2024, as its successor to GeForce Experience, incorporating major features from the older application. NVIDIA has urged remaining GeForce Experience users to upgrade as legacy services are phased out. Current app screens and labels may therefore differ from older GeForce Experience instructions. See NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App announcement and upgrade notice.
