Yes—the original retail Windows version of Half-Life was designed to run on Windows 2000. Its manual lists Windows 2000 as a supported operating system. That does not guarantee every CD, graphics driver, patch, or mod will work, though. A fresh install through today’s Steam client is a different matter: Steam supports Windows 10 and later, not Windows 2000.
First, which Half-Life do you mean?
This answer is about the original Half-Life (1998), the GoldSrc game. It distinguishes two ways of getting that game:

- Original retail CD: the release documented for Windows 2000. This is the historically appropriate route for a Windows 2000 PC.
- Steam edition: the game itself and the Steam client have separate requirements. Although Valve’s current store listing gives Windows XP as the game’s minimum Windows OS, Steam says its client has supported only Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. The store listing does not make the client usable on Windows 2000.
Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and GoldSrc mods are separate installations and may have their own compatibility problems. Half-Life 2 is a different Source-engine game; do not apply the original game’s Windows 2000 documentation to it.
What the original documentation establishes
The original Half-Life manual includes Windows 2000 among the supported operating systems. So the historically grounded answer for the original retail Windows release is yes. The manual is evidence for that release, not a guarantee that every later executable, unofficial modification, or modern distribution will behave identically.

Even on a supported OS, the game depends on working hardware and drivers. A machine may meet the game’s period-era expectations and still fail because its graphics or sound driver is unsuitable, the CD is damaged, or the installed build has a launch or copy-protection problem. Exact minimum processor and memory figures can vary by manual or packaging revision, so check the requirements printed with your own edition rather than treating one figure as universal.
Installing and testing a retail copy
- Identify the copy and system. Note whether it is a retail CD or Steam installation, the game version or patch, Windows 2000 Service Pack, CPU and RAM, and the graphics and sound card models and driver versions.
- Install from legitimate media. If the installer or autorun program fails, try the installed game executable, normally
hl.exe, once installation is complete. - Patch only for that release. Retail editions and versions can differ. Use a patch appropriate to the exact copy and keep a backup of the original installation before applying unofficial changes. Do not assume a particular patch is a universal Windows 2000 fix. CodeWeavers, in guidance for a compatibility-layer setup, notes that patch 1.0.0.8 can address some issues; that is not a Valve-certified fix for every native Windows 2000 installation.
- Test the base game before adding extras. Start without third-party mods. Try software rendering first, then OpenGL or Direct3D if the installed graphics driver exposes and supports that renderer.
- Change one thing at a time. If a renderer fails, check for a driver made for the exact GPU and Windows 2000. With period hardware, lowering resolution or color depth and disabling video enhancements may help isolate the issue, but none of these steps is guaranteed.
- Back up before experimenting. Retain a clean copy of the working installation so a patch or mod can be rolled back.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Reduce resolution or color depth and disable video enhancements as diagnostic steps. If it still crashes, check Windows 2000 Event Viewer for an application error and record the faulting module. |
| No sound, or a crash associated with entering a map | Verify Windows sound playback outside the game. If the driver exposes hardware-acceleration controls, test a lower setting; also try the game’s software-mixing or lower-quality audio options. |
| Base game works, mod does not | Remove the mod and retest the unmodified game. Mods can have separate installers or engine requirements. Valve has noted that some GoldSrc mods may have compatibility issues with updated Steam engine builds and has referenced the steam_legacy beta for some mod scenarios; that does not establish Windows 2000 support. |

Authentication, server availability, protocol changes, and firewall behavior do not determine whether the local game executable is compatible with Windows 2000. Why Steam is not a practical fresh-install route on Windows 2000
There are two different compatibility questions: whether a Half-Life game build can run on an operating system, and whether the Steam client can install and operate there. Valve’s store page currently lists Windows XP as the game’s minimum Windows OS, while Steam’s support information says the client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. Windows 2000 is outside that client support range.

For that reason, buying or freshly installing Half-Life through today’s Steam client is not an officially supported Windows 2000 setup. Do not assume that copying a Steam game folder to the old PC will reliably bypass the client limitation; that is an unsupported and uncertain workaround. If you want the Steam edition, use a supported modern Windows system.

The supplied documentation confirms Windows 2000 support for the original release but does not establish one Service Pack as mandatory for every edition. Record your Service Pack level along with your hardware and driver details before troubleshooting. On a machine this old, the availability and suitability of graphics and sound drivers may be a more immediate obstacle than the game’s original OS requirement.

Windows 2000 does not offer the same compatibility-mode controls familiar from later Windows versions. If you are running the game natively on Windows 2000, advice to select a Windows 98 compatibility mode does not apply; compatibility settings on a newer host are a different scenario.

For an authentic Windows 2000 setup, use a legitimate original retail copy, get the unmodified game working first, and aim for local or offline play. Expect to troubleshoot the disc, patch level, and period-correct drivers. For the least friction—or for a Steam copy—install and play on a Windows version supported by the current Steam client.
