Cloudflare DNS is an option League of Legends players can choose, but that does not mean Cloudflare runs League. Riot’s public documentation describes League match networking as Riot Direct and identifies AWS S3 as the origin for patch data. It does not establish Cloudflare’s current role, if any, in League login, the client, the website, or APIs.
What does “use Cloudflare” mean?
Cloudflare could refer to several different parts of an online game’s infrastructure. A player might use Cloudflare as a DNS resolver, while a game publisher could separately use a provider for match routing, patch delivery, or web requests. Evidence about one layer does not prove anything about the others.
- DNS: translates a service name into an address before a connection is made.
- Match networking: carries live game traffic between players and game servers.
- Patch delivery: distributes game files and updates.
- Web requests: may include login, client, website, and API traffic.
Can League players use Cloudflare DNS?
Yes. Riot Support lists Cloudflare’s public resolvers, including IPv4 addresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 and corresponding IPv6 addresses, as options players can set as their default DNS servers. Riot published the guidance on May 15, 2026: Increasing connection quality through public DNS servers.
This is a player-side network setting, not evidence that Riot uses Cloudflare to host matches or distribute League files. Riot also cautions that some internet service providers block third-party DNS. Changing resolvers is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed way to improve ping or connection quality.

Does Cloudflare carry League match traffic?
Riot’s engineering description identifies Riot Direct as the network tailored to run League games. It explains how traffic reaches Riot’s game servers through that network and why server location and the route traffic takes back to a player matter. The article is Leveling Up Networking for A Multi-Game Future.
That is the clearest official description of League’s match networking in the available sources. It does not establish that Cloudflare carries League match traffic, nor does it prove that Cloudflare has no role elsewhere in Riot’s services.

Does Cloudflare deliver League patches?
Riot’s patcher engineering article says League patch data is deployed to AWS S3, which serves as the global CDN origin. The article describes downloads from a CDN but does not name Cloudflare as the CDN operator. See Supercharging Data Delivery: The New League Patcher.
Riot’s article, published around 2019, also describes League as having over 300,000 chunks grouped into fewer than 5,000 bundles, with each release sharing over 85% of its bundles with the previous version. Those are figures attributed to Riot’s patcher article, not independent measurements or a statement of current counts.

What about League login, the client, website, and APIs?
The available Riot descriptions do not settle whether Cloudflare currently handles requests for League login, the client, the website, or APIs. It would be inaccurate to infer a blanket yes from Riot’s DNS guidance, or a blanket no from its descriptions of match networking and patch origins.
Riot has explicitly described Cloudflare in an article about VALORANT: client requests first flow through Cloudflare and then an nginx server for load balancing. That statement concerns VALORANT’s platform, not League’s. The article is Scalability and Load Testing for VALORANT; it should not be treated as proof that League follows the same request path.
