OBS output bitrate mainly controls how much data you send and the trade-off between bandwidth and picture quality. It is not a dependable power-saving control. To find your PC’s actual cost, measure its wall power while it is streaming, then calculate energy use using your local electricity rate.
What lowering bitrate changes—and what it does not establish
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent per second. Lowering it can ease upload-bandwidth demands, but it can also reduce image quality, particularly in scenes with motion. OBS’s x264 guidance discusses bitrate as a bandwidth-and-quality trade-off; it does not establish that reducing bitrate cuts a PC’s electricity use by a predictable amount (OBS Project, Streaming with x264).
The available guidance does not provide a controlled wattage comparison of the same PC streaming at different bitrates. A small effect on a particular machine cannot be ruled out, but there is no supported universal savings figure. Don’t assume a lower OBS bitrate will reduce your bill unless measurements on your own setup show that it does.
How to measure the cost of running your PC 24/7
Measure representative streaming power
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter to measure the PC’s average draw at the wall over a representative period. Run the OBS scenes, sources, and encoder settings you actually use. If you compare settings, change one at a time and keep the stream and other activity as similar as practical. A short sample may miss changes in scene complexity or background activity.

Convert watts into energy and cost
Use this calculation:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours running = kilowatt-hours (kWh)
For an always-on 30-day month, the estimate is:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 = approximate monthly kWh

Multiply the resulting kWh by your local electricity price per kWh to estimate the energy charge. Your actual bill depends on your measured draw, electricity rate, taxes, and billing period; there is no universal monthly cost for a 24/7 streaming PC.
Which OBS settings are more directly tied to workload?
OBS identifies resolution and frame rate as direct performance considerations. Its troubleshooting guidance states that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance, and recommends reducing it if the current rate is not working (OBS Project, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

- Output resolution: OBS says reducing output resolution can reduce GPU resources and encoder load.
- Frame rate: Fewer frames mean less rendering and encoding work. OBS gives dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working.
- Encoder and preset: x264 uses the CPU, and its presets trade CPU usage against bitrate and bandwidth. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated hardware encoding section on supported GPUs (NVIDIA, NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide). Neither source establishes that one encoder or preset will lower total system power on every PC.
- Scenes and competing work: Complex scenes, media or browser sources, filters, GPU contention, and other tasks can load the system. For an unattended stream, these may deserve investigation before bitrate.
Lower CPU or GPU utilization does not by itself prove that wall power has fallen. Total draw depends on the PC’s components, workload, power behavior, and configuration. Measure at the wall if electricity cost is the outcome you care about.
Choose bitrate for the stream, not as a power threshold
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its guidance accessed in 2026 lists the following recommendations for 1080p (YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions):

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not power thresholds or guarantees of a particular result for every video. OBS advises lowering bitrate when your connection cannot sustain the configured rate; its stream troubleshooting guide covers connection problems (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting). Lowering the rate can help with upload constraints, but going too low can make the picture look worse. Motion and resolution affect the bitrate needed for acceptable quality.
YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the encoder bitrate you send is not a direct measure of what every viewer receives. Set a rate suited to your codec, output, content, and upload connection, then judge the image and stream stability.
