The answer depends on the rules edition and the class you add: the 2014 rules use a shared proficiency table, while the 2024 rules specify multiclass proficiencies in each class description. A class feature can also grant proficiency later.
Check which edition your campaign uses
The two rules versions handle multiclass proficiencies differently. In the 2014 Basic Rules, use the centralized “Multiclassing Proficiencies” table. In the 2024 Basic Rules, use the “As a Multiclass Character” section in the description of the class you are taking.
Both versions limit what you gain when you take your first level in a class other than your initial class. Do not assume you receive all the new class’s level-one proficiencies.

2024 rules
The 2024 rules place the multiclass traits in each class’s description rather than in one shared table. The cited class entries grant Martial weapon proficiency for Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, and Ranger. The Cleric, Bard, and Monk multiclass traits do not list weapon proficiency. For any other class—or to confirm all the proficiencies gained—read the specific entry in 2024 Character Classes.

Class features can add proficiency later
Multiclass-entry proficiencies are not the only way to gain proficiency. The Sage Advice Compendium clarifies that a character gains proficiencies granted by a class feature even if that class was not the character’s first class. Its example is the Cleric’s Protector Divine Order, which can grant Martial weapon proficiency to a multiclass character. Apply the feature’s own requirements and wording.
How to check a character’s proficiency
- Confirm the rules version. Determine whether the campaign is using the 2014 or 2024 rules.
- Find the class being added. For 2014, look up that class in the “Multiclassing Proficiencies” table. For 2024, open the class description and find “As a Multiclass Character.”
- Check any class features gained. If a feature separately grants proficiency, add it according to that feature’s rules; do not treat it as part of the class’s multiclass-entry proficiencies.
What weapon proficiency changes
Proficiency does not determine whether a character can wield a weapon. Under the 2024 equipment rules, a character proficient with a weapon adds their Proficiency Bonus to attack rolls with it. An unproficient character can still make an attack, but does not add that bonus on account of proficiency. Consult the rules and effects used by your campaign for any other consequences.
