No—not as a PlayStation VR headset. Meta Quest (formerly Oculus Quest) headsets cannot natively run PS5 VR games, use PS VR2 tracking or Sense controllers, or replace PlayStation VR2. You can, however, view ordinary, non-VR PS5 games on a large virtual screen through an HDMI capture card and Meta’s HDMI Link, or through an unofficial Remote Play workaround.

That distinction matters: displaying PS5 video is not the same as running PS5 VR.

What “works with PS5” actually means

“Oculus Quest” is the former branding for Meta’s standalone headsets. The current families—Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro—use Meta’s Horizon OS, inside-out tracking and Quest controllers. None is an officially supported PS5 VR headset.

Use case Quest with PS5
Play ordinary PS5 games on a virtual cinema screen Possible through an HDMI capture setup or unofficial streaming
Play PS5 games in native stereoscopic VR No
Play PS VR2 games No
Use PS VR2 Sense controllers with Quest No native support
Use Quest controllers as PS5 VR controllers No
Use Quest as a directly supported PS5 display No official support
Use PS VR2 on PS5 Yes; it is Sony’s current PS5 VR platform
Use original PS VR on PS5 Yes, for supported PS4-era VR games with the required accessories

Sony identifies PlayStation VR2 as the headset designed for PS5. Sony’s PS5 FAQ also explains that the original PS VR requires its own headset, PS4 Camera and Camera Adaptor for compatible PS4 VR software: PlayStation 5 FAQ.

Why Quest cannot run PS5 VR

The PS5 does not recognize Quest as a supported PlayStation VR device. PS VR2 depends on Sony’s headset protocol, tracking, rendering path and Sense-controller integration. Quest uses a separate operating system and tracking stack.

  • A video connection does not provide positional tracking or stereoscopic VR rendering.
  • USB does not authenticate Quest as a PS VR2 headset.
  • Quest controllers do not automatically become PlayStation VR controllers.
  • A capture card transports an image but cannot add Sony’s VR software, tracking or controller support.

Sony’s Remote Play documentation specifically excludes PS VR2 mode, PS VR mode and PlayStation Camera-dependent experiences. Remote Play therefore cannot turn Quest into a PS5 VR system.

Displaying flat PS5 games with HDMI capture and HDMI Link

The most practical workaround for an existing Quest owner is to feed the PS5’s ordinary HDMI output into a USB capture device, then open Meta Quest HDMI Link. The Quest acts as a private virtual monitor; the game remains a conventional flat-screen PS5 game.

PS5 HDMI OUT → capture-card HDMI IN → USB → Quest running HDMI Link

Meta describes this external-video workflow here: Meta Quest HDMI Link. Availability and supported models can change with Horizon OS releases, so check Meta’s current requirements for your exact headset.

What you need

  • A Quest headset and current Horizon OS software.
  • Meta Quest HDMI Link, where available for your model and region.
  • An actual HDMI capture card with HDMI input and USB video output—not a passive HDMI-to-USB-C cable.
  • Preferably USB 3-class, UVC-compatible hardware capable of 1080p/60 capture and low-latency preview.
  • A data-capable USB-C cable and, if needed, a powered arrangement that prevents rapid headset battery drain.
  • The DualSense controller paired directly with the PS5.

Setup

  1. Update the Quest and install or open HDMI Link.
  2. Connect PS5 HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
  3. Connect the capture card’s USB output to the Quest’s USB-C port.
  4. Open HDMI Link and approve USB or video permissions.
  5. If the capture device is limited, set the PS5 to a compatible output such as 1080p.
  6. Pair the DualSense with the PS5 and launch a non-VR game.

Expect a large 2D screen in the Quest environment. Resolution and delay depend on the capture card, USB mode, headset software and signal processing; 1080p is a practical configuration, not a guarantee of PS VR2-quality stereoscopic video.

HDCP and the black-screen problem

HDCP can block capture. On current PS5 software, the relevant setting is generally Settings → System → HDMI → Enable HDCP. Disabling HDCP may permit gameplay capture, but protected streaming and other media can remain unavailable. Restore HDCP afterward if you use the PS5 for protected content. Sony can change menu labels, so verify the wording on your installed system version.

Common HDMI Link failures

  • Black screen: HDCP may still be enabled, the capture card may not support the PS5 output mode, HDMI Link may not recognize it, or the headset may not supply enough power.
  • No audio: Check capture-device audio support, Quest permissions, PS5 output format and mute controls.
  • Severe delay: The capture card may have high preview latency, a slow USB connection or extra processing in the signal path.
  • Capture card not detected: Open HDMI Link before reconnecting USB, try a known data cable, restart Quest, remove splitters or receivers, and test the card on another device.

Using PS Remote Play on Quest

Sony officially lists Remote Play clients for Windows PC, Mac, mobile devices, certain Android TV devices and another PS5—not Quest on the cited support page. Some owners sideload an Android Remote Play package, but that is unofficial and may stop working when Sony or Meta update their software.

What an unofficial setup may do

  • Show streamed, flat PS5 gameplay on a virtual screen.
  • Allow play without a direct HDMI cable when the network is strong.

What it cannot do

  • Provide native PS5 VR rendering.
  • Support PS VR2 Sense tracking.
  • Make PS VR2-only games playable on Quest.
  • Guarantee app installation, sign-in, controller handling or performance on every Quest release.

For best results, connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet where possible and use a strong 5 GHz-or-newer Wi-Fi connection for Quest. Congestion, distance and outside-home upload speed affect delay. Remote Play also requires the PS5’s appropriate Rest Mode settings when connecting remotely.

Computer-based streaming

Another path is PS5 → Remote Play on a computer → desktop or PC-VR streaming software → Quest. It can place the PS5 image in a virtual desktop, but adds a computer, more software and another latency point. For a simple private screen, a direct capture setup is usually less complicated.

Connections and features that do not work

  • Standard HDMI cable: Quest is not a conventional HDMI monitor and does not generally accept direct PS5 HDMI input.
  • Normal USB cable: USB alone does not provide PS VR2 authentication, tracking or game compatibility.
  • Meta Air Link: Intended primarily for PC-to-Quest VR streaming, not a direct PS5 connection.
  • Quest casting: Sends the Quest view outward; it does not pull PS5 video into the headset.
  • PS VR2 PC adapter: Designed for PS VR2 hardware and compatible PCs, not for converting Quest into PS VR2.

Which headset fits your goal?

Your goal Best fit Why
Native PS5 VR games, official support and Sense controllers PlayStation VR2 Sony’s PS5 VR platform; see official game information.
Standalone and mixed-reality VR, with occasional flat PS5 play Quest 3 or Quest 3S Quest is strong for standalone content; PS5 access is an optional workaround.
You already own Quest and only want a large private PS5 screen Compatible low-latency USB capture card Avoids buying another headset, but requires setup and may add delay.
The simplest, lowest-latency large screen TV, monitor or portable gaming display No capture, sideloading or headset battery constraints.

See Sony’s PS VR2 compatibility documentation at PlayStation Support. For Quest hardware, consult Meta’s current pages for Quest 3 and Quest 3S.

Verdict

Quest works with PS5 only in the limited sense that it can potentially display or stream flat PS5 gameplay. It is not a supported PS5 VR headset, cannot run PS VR2 games, and cannot use Quest controllers as native PlayStation VR controls. Choose Quest for Meta’s standalone and mixed-reality library; choose PS VR2 when native PS5 VR is the objective.
