Short answer: Nintendo’s official character profile calls Princess Peach and Mario “good friends,” while a recalled ending scene in one game depicts Peach kissing Mario. The scene suggests affection in that particular presentation, but Nintendo’s profile does not declare them a couple or establish one relationship status for every Mario story.
What does Nintendo say about Peach and Mario?
Nintendo’s official Super Mario character profile says: “Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.” That is the clearest direct description of their relationship in the cited official material. It describes friendship and mutual support; it does not say they are dating or that Peach is in love with Mario.
What does the kiss scene mean?
In a Nintendo interview about Super Mario All-Stars, developers recalled creating an ending scene in which Peach kisses Mario, and noted that the scene was changed for Super Mario All-Stars. A kiss is a romantic-coded gesture, so the scene supports reading that particular game presentation as affectionate. It does not override the broader character profile or prove that every game treats Peach and Mario as a couple.
Are Peach and Mario a couple?
The cited official material does not settle that as a franchise-wide fact. The character profile uses “good friends”; a specific game ending offers a more intimate moment, and the interview says that scene was later changed in another version. Those claims can coexist because one is a concise profile and the other concerns a particular scene and version. The safest answer is that Peach and Mario are officially described as friends, while some game portrayals invite a romantic interpretation.

Does Peach’s role in the games answer the question?
No. Nintendo’s developer discussion of Super Mario 3D World explains that Peach was included as a playable female character. That is useful context about her role in the series, but being playable does not establish whether she loves Mario.
