Yes. The PS4 has Bluetooth, but it does not support every Bluetooth device or use. It uses Bluetooth for supported peripherals such as DUALSHOCK 4 controllers, PlayStation Move devices and Bluetooth keyboards. That does not mean generic Bluetooth headphones will pair directly for game audio. If you want wireless headphone sound, check your exact model’s compatibility or use a USB Bluetooth audio transmitter.
What does Bluetooth work with on PS4?
Sony documents Bluetooth as one way a DUALSHOCK 4 controller can communicate with the console; the controller can also communicate over USB. Sony’s PS4 FAQ lists PlayStation Move peripherals and Bluetooth keyboards among supported device categories. These examples establish that the console has Bluetooth, but support is device- and use-specific.
Sony’s North American PS4 FAQ, published October 30, 2013, said that existing third-party Bluetooth headsets would not be supported at launch, while most USB headsets would be supported after system software update 1.50. That is launch-era guidance, not a current compatibility list for every headset. Sony’s current troubleshooting guidance still directs users to check whether their particular Bluetooth device can be used with PS4.
Can you connect Bluetooth headphones to a PS4?
Sometimes, but do not assume that a Bluetooth headset or headphones will pair directly with the PS4 and provide audio. The console’s Bluetooth support for controllers and other peripherals does not guarantee Bluetooth audio compatibility. Check the exact headphone or headset model and the functions you need; game audio compatibility alone does not establish microphone or voice-chat support.

Use a USB Bluetooth audio transmitter
A USB Bluetooth audio transmitter is a documented way to route headphone audio to Bluetooth headphones. A 2020 PlayStation Blog walkthrough shows a Creative BT-W3 plugged into a PS4 USB port, paired with Bluetooth headphones. That demonstration establishes one setup, not compatibility for every transmitter, headphone, PS4 model or software version.
Use wired headphones with the controller
If your headphones have a compatible 3.5 mm plug, connecting them to the DUALSHOCK 4 is a straightforward alternative. Sony documents audio routing for a headset connected to the controller. The relevant controller-headset option appears in the audio-device settings only when a headset is connected.

Choose a compatible USB or PlayStation wireless headset
A USB gaming headset or PlayStation wireless headset designed for PS4 may suit readers who do not need Bluetooth headphones specifically. Confirm the exact model’s PS4 compatibility and microphone features rather than relying on the broad, launch-era statement about USB headsets.
How to set up Bluetooth headphones through a USB transmitter
- Connect the USB Bluetooth audio transmitter to a USB port on the PS4.
- Put the transmitter and headphones into pairing mode, following the instructions for each device.
- On the console, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices and check the selected input and output devices.
- If using a separate microphone plugged into the DUALSHOCK 4, select Headset Connected to Controller as the input and the USB transmitter as the output. The PlayStation Blog’s BT-W3 example uses USB Headset (Creative BT-W3) for output.
- Under Output to Headphones, choose All Audio if you want game sound in the headphones. Sony says the default is Chat Audio; choose the setting that matches what you want to hear.
Menu options and device names can vary with the connected hardware. Sony’s instructions for changing PS4 audio output explain the headphone-routing settings. For voice chat, check both the selected input device and the headset or transmitter’s microphone support.

Why won’t my Bluetooth device connect?
A failed pairing attempt does not necessarily mean the PS4 lacks Bluetooth; the device may not be supported for that connection. For error CE-30993-4, Sony recommends checking device compatibility, trying another compatible Bluetooth device, restarting the console and resetting the Bluetooth device if possible.
- Check whether the exact device is compatible with PS4 and whether it supports the function you want, such as game audio or voice chat.
- Make sure the device is in pairing mode and follow its own reset instructions if pairing continues to fail.
- Restart the PS4, then try pairing again.
- If direct pairing is unsupported, try a compatible USB audio transmitter, wired controller connection or PS4-compatible USB headset instead.
