The games generally call this relationship value friendship; “happiness” is the common player term. Rare Candy also raises a Pokémon’s level by one, which is a separate effect and can matter for friendship-based evolution.
How Rare Candy affects friendship
From Generation III onward, Rare Candy can increase friendship as well as raise a Pokémon’s level, according to Bulbapedia’s Rare Candy mechanics reference. The increase is small, not a guaranteed shortcut to a friendship requirement. The amount and whether it applies depend on the game and the Pokémon’s current friendship.
Game-specific references illustrate that variation. In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Serebii’s happiness table groups Rare Candy with items that raise friendship, with the increase tied to the current friendship band. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Serebii’s friendship table also lists Rare Candy, and shows that its effect tapers across friendship bands, reaching zero in the highest band listed. These references do not establish one universal point value for every game.
Friendship and level-ups are separate effects
A Rare Candy always raises the Pokémon’s level by one when used, while the friendship increase is a distinct, game-dependent effect. Some Pokémon evolve when they level up after reaching the game’s friendship requirement; additional conditions may also apply. A Rare Candy’s level-up can therefore trigger an eligible evolution, but using one does not itself guarantee an evolution.

Friendship mechanics and evolution requirements have changed across the series. A general mechanics reference reports a friendship threshold of 220 in Generations II–VII and 160 from Generation VIII onward, but those figures are context rather than a rule for every title or every friendship-based evolution. Check the specific game’s requirements for the Pokémon you’re trying to evolve. Bulbapedia’s friendship reference outlines the generation differences.

The Rare Candy discussed here is the item in the video games. The Pokémon Trading Card Game has a Rare Candy card with a different effect: its official text concerns evolving a Basic Pokémon into a Stage 2 Pokémon. It does not raise a video-game Pokémon’s friendship. The official card database entry describes the card’s effect.
