Roblox works on some old iPads, but the iPad must be able to run the iPadOS version currently required by the App Store in your region. As checked on August 18, 2026, the U.S. Roblox listing requires iPadOS 13.0 or later. That makes an iPad 5th generation or later, iPad Air 2 or later, iPad mini 4 or later, or an iPad Pro potentially eligible to install it. Eligibility does not guarantee smooth play: demanding Roblox experiences can still lag or crash on older hardware.
Which old iPads can install Roblox?
The U.S. App Store listing for Roblox showed a minimum of iPadOS 13.0 on August 18, 2026. App requirements can change, and listings may differ by region, so check the Roblox listing in your own App Store before buying a used iPad. As a practical guide, the oldest iPad generations below cannot run iPadOS 13. Models in the eligible groups can meet that software threshold, but their actual maximum software version depends on the model. Apple’s security-update records show that some older iPads remain on legacy software branches; Apple’s current compatibility list covers newer supported families. “May install” means the iPad can meet the stated operating-system floor, not that every regional listing or future Roblox release will support it. Apple’s device-capability requirements guidance explains why App Store compatibility depends on device and software capabilities.

How to identify your iPad and check compatibility
- On the iPad, open Settings → General → About. Note the Model Name and Software Version.
- If you need to identify the generation, use the model number shown under About and Apple’s iPad identification and support page.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update and install the newest version offered for that iPad. If no update is offered, the device has reached its practical software ceiling.
- Open the App Store, find Roblox, and read its Compatibility section. If it requires a newer iPadOS than the iPad can run, the current app cannot be installed on that device.
- Restart the iPad, then try the listing again. Recheck before purchasing a used device because the app’s minimum can change.
Installation is not the same as playable performance
Roblox is a network-connected platform of user-created experiences, not one game with a single workload. A simple experience may be playable on an older eligible iPad, while a large, heavily scripted or visually complex one may stutter, load slowly, or crash. Test the specific experiences you care about rather than relying only on whether Roblox installs.
- Slow loading or stuttering: Older hardware, memory pressure, a demanding experience, or unstable Wi-Fi can all contribute.
- Crashes: Low free storage, background apps, device heat, battery condition, or software and app issues may be involved.
- Heat, battery drain, or delayed touch response: These can occur when an older device is under sustained load; screen recording or multitasking can add strain.
- Connection trouble: The Roblox listing requires a network connection. A compatible iPad still needs reliable Wi-Fi or cellular service.
These are possible symptoms, not a prediction that every older iPad will show them. Performance depends on the experience, device condition, available storage, network, and software version; a specific frame rate cannot be promised without testing that exact setup.

What to try if Roblox will not install, launch, or connect
- Update iPadOS: Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the newest version available for the model.
- Update Roblox: In the App Store, check for an update. If the listing says a newer iPadOS is required and none is available for the iPad, the device cannot install that version.
- Restart and reduce load: Restart the iPad and close other apps, then try Roblox again.
- Check storage and connection: Make room if storage is nearly full and try a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Reinstall if needed: If the installation appears corrupted, delete Roblox and reinstall it from the App Store. Confirm you know the account credentials before signing out or reinstalling.
- Contact Roblox Support: If the app continues to crash, will not update, or cannot connect, follow Roblox’s official iOS app troubleshooting guidance.
If Roblox used to work but no longer does, the app’s minimum may have risen, the iPad may have reached its update limit, or an older build may no longer connect to current services. Installing an old release is not a dependable fix.
Can an old Roblox version or Safari work instead?
In some cases, the App Store may offer a last compatible app version to someone who previously downloaded the app. It is not guaranteed: Roblox may not offer one, the account may never have acquired the app, or the old build may no longer work with current services. Do not assume a past installation will continue to launch or connect.

Roblox’s main iPad experience is the App Store app; Safari should not be treated as a full substitute. Roblox Studio creation is for Windows and Mac, not a workaround for an iPad that cannot run the game app. Avoid unofficial IPA downloads, jailbreaking, and “revival” services: they can create security, account, malware, and service-compatibility risks.

If buying specifically for Roblox, treat iPadOS 13 compatibility as only the minimum software floor for the U.S. listing checked on August 18, 2026. The iPad 5th generation, Air 2, and mini 4 are among the oldest eligible families, but they are poor long-term choices when the buyer expects demanding experiences, needs several more years of app compatibility, or finds a newer model at a similar price.

As buying recommendations—not official Roblox requirements—prefer at least an iPad 6th generation, iPad Air 3rd generation, or iPad mini 5th generation when prices are close. For more demanding experiences, consider an iPad 8th generation or newer, iPad Air 4th generation or newer, iPad mini 6th generation or newer, or iPad Pro 2018 or newer. These recommendations reflect the value of newer hardware and a longer likely software runway, not guaranteed performance in every game.

- Check battery condition, screen, available storage, and whether Activation Lock has been removed.
- Compare the price with a newer reputable refurbished model; do not buy solely because the old iPad can just meet today’s minimum.
- For a child who also needs school or communication apps, consider those apps’ compatibility and the iPad’s security-update status too.
Is an old iPad a good choice for a child?
Roblox includes user-generated content and communication features, as well as advertising and in-app purchases; its U.S. App Store listing shows an age rating of 13+ with content restrictions and identifies parental controls. Those controls do not make the platform automatically safe. Parents should configure Roblox account restrictions and Apple Screen Time separately, and supervise use. A slow device may be frustrating, but it does not make the content safer.
