Yes. Sodium works with shader packs when you install Iris alongside a compatible Sodium build. Sodium handles rendering and performance; Iris adds support for OptiFine-style shader packs. The key is matching the Iris, Sodium, and Minecraft versions—not installing Sodium alone.
How Sodium, Iris, and shader packs fit together
Sodium is a rendering and performance mod, not a shader-pack loader. Iris provides the integration that lets compatible shader packs run with Sodium. Sodium’s installation guide describes Iris as building on Sodium and supporting OptiFine-style shader packs.

In practice, install Iris for your Minecraft version and use a Sodium release compatible with that Iris build. Then select a shader pack supported by Iris and follow the pack’s installation instructions.
Do Sodium and Iris work together on every version?
Not necessarily. Compatibility depends on the specific Minecraft, Sodium, and Iris releases. Check the release notes for all three before updating, especially when a new Minecraft version or Sodium release has just arrived.

For example, Sodium’s release listing for Sodium 0.9.2 on Minecraft 26.3, dated September 20, 2026, warned that Iris was not yet compatible and advised users who wanted Iris not to update Sodium until Iris received an update. That warning applies to that release pairing at that time; it is not a blanket statement that Sodium and Iris are incompatible. How to set up shaders with Sodium
- Check your Minecraft version. Confirm which Sodium and Iris releases support the exact game version you use.
- Install compatible Sodium and Iris versions. Use the installation instructions for your setup; do not assume the newest release of each mod is automatically compatible with the others.
- Choose an Iris-compatible shader pack. Shader packs are separate downloads from Sodium and Iris.
- Test the pack, then adjust its settings if needed. If performance is poor, Sodium’s guide suggests reducing render distance or choosing a lower-quality shader preset.
Shader packs are not the same as core-shader resource packs
There is an important distinction between a shader pack loaded through Iris and a resource pack that replaces Minecraft’s internal “core shaders.” Sodium’s documentation says replacements for the game’s internal shaders are unsupported, because those interfaces can change between game updates. A resource pack that makes this kind of replacement should not be expected to work with Sodium. See the Sodium resource-pack documentation.

What to check if shaders stop working
- After a Minecraft update: verify that your exact Minecraft version is supported by both Sodium and Iris.
- After a Sodium update: check whether Iris supports that Sodium release before updating or troubleshooting graphics settings.
- If only one pack fails: check that the pack is intended for Iris and is compatible with your game version; a core-shader replacement is a different, unsupported feature.
- If the game runs but performance is poor: lower render distance or select a less demanding shader preset before assuming the setup is incompatible.
Does Sodium need Indium for shaders?
No. Indium is not the shader loader; Iris provides shader-pack support. Sodium’s installation guide says Indium is no longer necessary as of Sodium 0.6.x. Older Sodium 0.5.x setups on Minecraft 1.20 or earlier may need Indium for compatibility with some Fabric mods, but that is a separate compatibility issue.

The cited Sodium documentation does not specify a universal minimum GPU for shader packs. Sodium’s project overview lists current graphics drivers compatible with OpenGL 4.5 or newer as a project support requirement, but that is not a guarantee of shader-pack performance or a shader-specific minimum. Actual results depend on the GPU, operating system, driver, shader pack, resolution, and settings. See the Sodium project overview.
