Star Wars Zero Company has optional permadeath, adjustable difficulty outside combat, and extensive squad customization. Permadeath is on by default according to EA, but you can disable it; when it is active, an operator dies after accumulating three injuries from being downed.
How permadeath works—and how to turn it off
EA says permadeath is enabled by default, but it can be disabled. The official StarWars.com gameplay guide explains the consequence when it is active: each time an operator goes down, they receive an injury. Three injuries result in that operator’s death, so a single knockdown does not cause permanent death.
The same guide says you can restart a mission through the game menu and try a different strategy with the same operators. That gives you a way to retry a mission, while the permadeath setting determines whether accumulated injuries can ultimately remove an operator for good.
Can you change the difficulty?
Yes. The official guide says you can adjust the difficulty rating at any time outside combat. It also describes mission threat ratings as Risky, Dangerous, and Extreme. Those are mission ratings; the guide does not establish that they are the complete list of selectable campaign difficulty settings.

What can you customize in your squad?
You can customize Hawks’ combat class and appearance. The official game page also says you can recruit original characters alongside custom-made team members, then tailor characters’ appearances, loadouts, and abilities.
Player-created characters are part of the design, not just cosmetic stand-ins. In a June 9, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Bit Reactor CEO and Creative Director Greg Foertsch said players can bring in their own characters and have them work alongside the authored cast. The game also links squad relationships and tactical choices across its strategy and combat layers.

How these systems fit the tactical campaign
Combat is turn-based, and operators use action points. Between cycles, you choose missions and operations at the Den. That structure makes the settings and customization choices relevant to how you approach the campaign: you can tune difficulty outside combat, decide whether injuries can lead to permanent losses, and shape the squad’s abilities and equipment.
