No. Valve’s published Steam Subscriber Agreement does not state a yearly fee for simply keeping a Steam account. You may still pay for games, subscriptions, hardware, marketplace transactions, applicable taxes, or internet and telephone service. A yearly Steam-related charge may belong to a particular subscription rather than to your account.
What Steam may charge you for
Steam costs depend on the purchases or services you choose, not a general account-maintenance fee. Valve’s agreement covers charges for subscriptions, Steam Wallet funds, hardware, and other fees you incur. Charges and Wallet purchases are payable in advance and generally final, subject to the agreement’s stated exceptions.
- Games and other purchases: You pay for content or products you choose to buy.
- Subscriptions: A specific game or service may charge on a recurring schedule. Valve’s agreement says continued use of a subscription with recurring payments authorizes collection of the applicable recurring amount.
- Marketplace activity: Valve may charge a fee for trades or sales in a Steam Subscription Marketplace. Any applicable fee is disclosed before the transaction is completed.
- Taxes and connectivity: Applicable sales or use taxes may be collected. You are responsible for internet, telephone, and other connection costs; third-party websites or vendors may also charge separately.
Why a Steam-related charge may recur yearly
Steam’s refund policy describes periodic subscriptions, including monthly or yearly subscriptions, as access to particular content or services. That recurring bill is distinct from a fee for maintaining your Steam account. Check the subscription’s name, billing period, and amount shown when you signed up to identify what the charge covers.
How to identify a charge or manage a subscription
- Open your Steam account’s transaction or purchase details and find the charge by date and amount.
- Check whether the transaction is a game or product purchase, a subscription, Wallet funding, a marketplace transaction, or a charge from an outside provider.
- If it is an active subscription, open its details in your account to review the billing terms or cancel it.
Refunds for renewable subscriptions are conditional, not automatic. Under Steam’s policy, a refund may be requested within 48 hours of the initial purchase or automatic renewal if the subscription has not been used in the current billing cycle. Consult the refund policy for the applicable terms and exceptions.
