Netflix lists usage of up to 3 GB per hour for HD and up to 7 GB per hour for UHD/4K; lower playback settings use less. Those are Netflix figures, not a universal rate for every Xbox app or for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
How much data does Netflix use on Xbox?
Netflix publishes these maximums by playback setting and quality. They are guidance for Netflix video streaming, not measurements of every hour or every Xbox service.

Netflix’s data-use guidance describes these as amounts of up to each listed rate. Actual consumption depends on the service’s playback quality and settings. Other video apps may use different encoding and data-use settings.
What does that mean for a monthly data allowance?
Multiply the hours watched by the relevant service’s actual hourly use. For example, 10 hours of Netflix at its published HD maximum of 3 GB per hour would add up to as much as 30 GB. That is arithmetic from Netflix’s maximum figure, not a guaranteed monthly total.

Whether that is “a lot” depends on your household’s allowance and viewing habits. A few hours of HD can add several gigabytes, while Netflix’s listed 4K maximum is higher. Check your internet provider’s usage meter to see the real household total instead of treating a published maximum as a prediction.
Does watching in 4K use more data?
Netflix’s published maximum is up to 7 GB per hour for UHD/4K, compared with up to 3 GB per hour for HD. To stream Netflix in Ultra HD on Xbox, Netflix lists Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X as supported models. It also requires a qualifying Netflix plan, a 4K-capable display and output, suitable playback settings, and a steady internet connection of at least 15 Mbps. See Netflix’s Xbox device guidance for the service’s requirements.

Is Xbox Cloud Gaming the same as streaming a show?
No. Netflix sends video of a fixed program; Xbox Cloud Gaming streams interactive gameplay. Xbox lists a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps for Cloud Gaming and notes that performance depends on factors including connection, location, and device. That speed requirement does not say how many gigabytes gameplay uses per hour, and Xbox’s Cloud Gaming page does not provide an hourly data-use figure. Do not apply Netflix’s video rates to cloud gaming.

- Open Netflix’s Playback settings for the profile you use.
- Select a lower data-use setting, such as Low or Medium, if your allowance is tight. Netflix notes that restricting usage can reduce video quality.
- Check your internet provider’s usage meter to confirm the effect on your household’s total.
Netflix explains the available controls in its Playback settings and data-use help page. There is no single Xbox-wide hourly streaming rate established by these figures; downloads and online play are also different network activities and are not quantified here.
