Not in resolution. The New Nintendo 3DS still uses 640 × 480 cameras—about 0.3 megapixels—just like the original 3DS family. Its meaningful camera-related improvement is Super-Stable 3D: the inward-facing camera tracks your face so the stereoscopic display remains aligned as you move. There is also some evidence of modestly better low-light capture, but it is not supported by a controlled measurement.
The short answer
- Sharper photos or more megapixels: No. Nintendo lists 640 × 480 (approximately 0.3 MP) for the New model.
- Better 3D viewing: Yes. Face tracking and infrared assistance make the display’s 3D effect far less sensitive to head movement.
- Low-light photos: Possibly somewhat better, based on teardown and comparison observations, but the size of the improvement is unquantified.
- Worth a large premium for cameras alone: Usually no.
Official specifications establish the same resolution and basic layout, but they do not prove that every sensor, lens coating, or processing path is identical between generations.

What actually improved?
Super-Stable 3D changes viewing, not pixel count
On New Nintendo 3DS systems, the inward-facing camera and infrared hardware detect the viewer’s position. Software then adjusts the display’s stereoscopic image as the viewer moves. Nintendo describes this as Super-Stable 3D: it widens the practical viewing sweet spot and reduces double images or sudden 3D collapse.
#1 Best Overall
- Bundle includes: 3DS XL, Charging Dock, Charger, Stylus, Carrying Case, Top&Bottom Screen Protectors And 4GB SD Card.
- Faster processing power than Nintendo 3DS and Face tracking 3D.
- The New Nintendo 3DS XL system plays all Nintendo DS games. Nintendo DS games will not appear in 3D.
- Item is Refurbished and has a 90-day Guarantee.
- C Stick for enhanced controls; Built-in amiibo compatibility and NFC support.
This is primarily a display-tracking upgrade. It does not make the inward camera a higher-resolution selfie camera, and it does not increase the resolution of photographs captured by the two outer cameras. See Nintendo’s technical explanation at Nintendo’s Super-Stable 3D article.
Possible low-light improvement
An iFixit teardown of the New Nintendo 3DS XL describes the rear cameras as having “apparently improved low-light capture.” A published comparison also presents the New model as improved. Neither source identifies the sensors or supplies standardized exposure, noise, or sharpness measurements, so treat this as a possible modest advantage rather than a guaranteed camera upgrade.

- Improved stereoscopic 3D than previous devices
- No power cord included
- 4" screens and analog 3D stick and C-Stick, extended battery life, better Wi-Fi support , 3D Camera included
- new ZR and ZL shoulder buttons
Equal output resolution also does not establish identical optics, exposure behavior, or image processing.
How the cameras perform in real use
Daylight and ordinary snapshots
Both generations produce small, low-detail images. At 640 × 480, a frame contains only 307,200 pixels. Expect visible noise, blur and limited fine detail, especially when enlarging, cropping or printing. The New model should not be confused with a modern phone camera simply because its photos may look steadier in 3D mode.

Dark rooms and indoor scenes
Both systems are weak in dim light. The New XL may retain somewhat more usable detail in some conditions, but the available evidence cannot establish a universal difference in dynamic range, color accuracy, autofocus or sharpness.
Selfies and the inner camera
The inner camera takes 2D photos only. Its documented New-model benefit is tracking the viewer for Super-Stable 3D, not better selfie quality. There is no supplied evidence of a resolution or image-quality upgrade for self-portraits.

3D photographs and video
The two outer cameras record separate left- and right-eye images for stereoscopic photos and video. Capture resolution remains low on both generations; the New system mainly makes the result easier to view on its own screen. The 3DS Camera application includes 2D/3D photos and video, effects, manual settings, a leveler, self-timer and voice-activated timer; it is not a completely new New-model camera app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Shared limitations and troubleshooting
- Fixed-focus lenses and low resolution limit detail.
- Dark scenes can produce noise and blur.
- Strong light sources can cause poor exposure or artifacts.
- Misaligned or doubled 3D images can result from distance, lighting, dirty lenses or camera damage.
Nintendo recommends a well-lit subject at least 12 inches from the camera for 3D photos and advises avoiding direct strong light. Clean the lenses if images look poor: Nintendo’s 3D photo instructions and troubleshooting guidance.

- The New Nintendo 3DS XL system plays all Nintendo DS games; Nintendo DS games will not appear in 3D
- AC Adapter sold separately; New Nintendo 3DS XL uses the same AC adapter as Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS and 2DS
- 3D Mode recommended for Ages 7 plus
If Super-Stable 3D does not track you, check that the inner camera has a clear view and that the console is positioned normally. Obstructions, poor lighting, or hardware damage can affect tracking. A New Nintendo 2DS XL cannot display stereoscopic 3D, even though it shares much of the New-generation hardware.
Which model should you buy?
Choose a New Nintendo 3DS or XL when
- You regularly use glasses-free 3D and want it to remain stable while moving.
- You value the New generation’s faster hardware, C Stick, ZL/ZR buttons and New-exclusive software.
- A possible low-light improvement matters, but you understand it is not quantified.
Choose an original 3DS or 3DS XL when
- You want occasional novelty photos or 3D images at a substantially lower used price.
- You do not care about face-tracked 3D or New-exclusive features.
- You accept that the camera is best used in good light and is not a serious photography tool.
Consider a New Nintendo 2DS XL carefully
It offers New-generation performance and controls but no stereoscopic display. It is therefore a poor fit if viewing 3D photographs on the console is your main reason to upgrade. See Nintendo’s family comparison at Nintendo’s 3DS comparison page.
Used-buying checks
Nintendo’s current support material says it no longer services several 3DS-family systems, including the original and New 3DS models. For a used unit, test both outer cameras, the inner camera, 3D slider and face tracking; inspect lenses, hinges and battery condition; and verify the stylus and charger. Do not assume an untested camera or tracking system will be easy to repair.
Verdict
The New Nintendo 3DS has a better camera experience, not a dramatically better camera. Its cameras remain 0.3-megapixel, fixed-focus units. Buy the New model for Super-Stable 3D and the broader New-system upgrades; do not pay a large premium expecting sharp, high-resolution photography.
