Does the PS5 Have Dolby Vision? Here’s What It Actually Supports

The PS5’s documented HDR format is HDR10, not Dolby Vision. A Dolby Vision TV works with PS5, but the console does not currently provide verified Dolby Vision gaming, streaming or UHD Blu-ray output.

No. As of September 2026, Sony documents the PS5’s HDR output as HDR10, not Dolby Vision. A Dolby Vision television will work with a PS5, but PS5 games and the console’s video playback should not be expected to output Dolby Vision.

What HDR format does the PS5 support?

Sony’s official PS5 specifications and FAQ identify HDR10 as the console’s supported HDR format. Sony’s current PS5 video-output guide documents HDR, 4K, 8K, 120 Hz, VRR and ALLM options, but does not provide a Dolby Vision mode or calibration workflow.

That applies to the original PS5 disc and Digital Editions, the PS5 Slim models and PS5 Pro, unless Sony publishes a future model-specific or system-software update.

HDR10 and Dolby Vision are different HDR formats. Dolby Vision can use dynamic metadata, while HDR10 is the standard HDR format documented for PS5 output. This does not mean Dolby Vision televisions are incompatible: such TVs generally accept HDR10 as well.

Does the PS5 support Dolby Vision gaming?

No verified native Dolby Vision gaming support is available. PS5 games are designed to use HDR10 output. There is no Dolby Vision setting under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.

If your television offers a picture mode called “Dolby Vision Game,” that mode is intended for a Dolby Vision signal. Selecting it does not convert the PS5’s HDR10 output into native Dolby Vision. Depending on the TV, the mode may be unavailable, or the television may continue processing an HDR10 signal.

A Dolby Vision TV can still produce an excellent PS5 image. For gaming, the more relevant specifications are:

  • 4K resolution
  • HDR10 performance and accurate tone mapping
  • 4K/120 Hz support
  • Variable refresh rate (VRR)
  • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
  • Low input lag
  • A suitable HDMI 2.1 input and sufficient bandwidth

Do PS5 streaming apps output Dolby Vision?

Do not assume that Netflix, Disney+ or another app on PS5 outputs Dolby Vision simply because the service supports Dolby Vision elsewhere. Sony does not currently document the PS5 as a Dolby Vision streaming source for its built-in apps.

Dolby Vision streaming depends on the specific source device, app version, service, title, region, subscription where applicable, HDMI chain and television. The same service may provide Dolby Vision through a TV’s built-in app or a compatible external streaming player while using HDR10, or another format, through PS5.

Sony’s HDR compatibility guidance explains that Dolby Vision requires compatible support from the relevant app or connected playback device. For reliable Dolby Vision streaming, use the TV’s own supported app or a confirmed-compatible streaming device.

Does the PS5 disc drive support Dolby Vision?

The PS5 should not be treated as a Dolby Vision Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Sony’s PS5 documentation specifies HDR10 for video output and does not list Dolby Vision playback for UHD Blu-ray discs.

If Dolby Vision discs are important to you, use a dedicated UHD Blu-ray player that explicitly supports Dolby Vision. Confirm support for the exact model rather than assuming every player from a particular brand includes it.

Do not confuse Dolby Atmos with Dolby Vision. Atmos is an audio format; Vision is a video format. Sony added support for 3D Audio through compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices in a 2023 PS5 update, but that audio feature does not indicate Dolby Vision video support. See Sony’s PS5 audio update for the documented Atmos-related functionality.

Will a Dolby Vision TV work with a PS5?

Yes. The PS5 sends HDR10, and Dolby Vision televisions normally support HDR10 as a fallback or standard HDR input. The TV’s Dolby Vision capability does not turn the PS5 into a Dolby Vision source.

When choosing a TV for PS5, check the gaming specifications separately from Dolby Vision support:

  • HDR10 compatibility
  • 4K/120 Hz on the HDMI input you plan to use
  • VRR range and compatibility
  • ALLM or automatic game-mode switching
  • Low input lag
  • HDMI 2.1 bandwidth
  • Panel brightness, contrast and local dimming or OLED black levels

Sony’s “Perfect for PlayStation 5” televisions advertise features such as Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. Those features can improve setup or picture handling, but they are not the same as the PS5 outputting Dolby Vision. A TV’s panel quality and gaming performance may make it a strong PS5 display even when Dolby Vision is used only by other sources.

Recommended PS5 HDR settings

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then use these settings as a starting point:

  1. Resolution: Set to Automatic or 2160p.
  2. HDR: Choose On When Supported. This keeps non-HDR content in SDR. Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output and is usually less useful if you want content to remain in its native format.
  3. Adjust HDR: Follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate the HDR image for your TV.
  4. 120 Hz Output: Turn it on if your TV, HDMI port and game support 120 Hz.
  5. VRR: Turn it on for a compatible display. You can enable Apply to Unsupported Games, but disable that option if it causes flicker or visual artifacts.
  6. ALLM: Leave it enabled when your TV supports automatic low-latency switching.

To check the signal the console recognizes, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Information for the Connected HDMI Device. Also check the TV’s own information panel. If the TV reports HDR10 rather than Dolby Vision, that is the expected behavior for PS5.

If HDR, 4K/120 or VRR is not working

  1. Confirm HDR is set to On When Supported or Always On.
  2. Check that the game or video actually supports HDR.
  3. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV to remove an AV receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch as a possible cause.
  4. Use the TV’s HDMI input marked enhanced, high bandwidth or HDMI 2.1, if applicable.
  5. Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI format setting if the manufacturer requires it.
  6. Update the TV firmware and PS5 system software.
  7. Use the cable supplied with the PS5 or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
  8. If the picture flickers, try Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and set it to -1 or -2. This can reduce bandwidth problems, but may limit combinations of 4K/120, RGB/YUV444 and 8K output.
  9. Once direct connection works, reconnect the receiver, soundbar or switch and verify that every device supports the desired signal.

These checks follow Sony’s 4K, 120 Hz and video-output troubleshooting guidance.

Can an HDMI cable, receiver or converter add Dolby Vision?

No. HDMI cables, splitters, switches and AV receivers can pass through a format that the source supports, but they cannot add native Dolby Vision output to a PS5 that is sending HDR10.

An older receiver may also restrict the PS5 to 4K/60, prevent VRR or 4K/120, or create HDMI handshake problems. A converter advertised as changing formats should not be assumed to produce properly mastered, native Dolby Vision gaming. The PS5’s source signal remains HDR10.

For PS5 gaming, prioritize 4K/120, VRR and ALLM passthrough. For Dolby Vision movies, confirm Dolby Vision passthrough on every device between the compatible player and the TV.

What should you buy if Dolby Vision is the priority?

For PS5 gaming and Dolby Vision movies

Choose a TV that combines Dolby Vision with HDR10, 4K/120 Hz, VRR, low input lag and suitable HDMI 2.1 inputs. The reason to buy Dolby Vision is access to compatible movies and shows from other sources—not native Dolby Vision PS5 gaming.

Televisions such as Sony’s BRAVIA gaming range demonstrate how PS5-focused features and Dolby Vision television support can coexist, but they remain separate capabilities.

For Dolby Vision streaming

Use the TV’s built-in Dolby Vision apps or a compatible external player. Products in categories such as Apple TV 4K, Roku streaming players, Amazon Fire TV and Google TV should be checked for compatibility with your particular TV, service, title and Dolby Vision profile.

For Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray discs

Buy a dedicated Dolby Vision-capable UHD Blu-ray player. Check exact model specifications, HDR10 fallback, audio bitstream support, firmware updates and any disc-region requirements. Sony’s Blu-ray player range and Panasonic’s Blu-ray player range are examples of categories to compare, not blanket endorsements of every model.

What about reports of a Dolby Vision PS5 update?

Online reports or an email mentioning Dolby Vision are not enough to establish that the feature has launched. As of September 2026, no matching official PlayStation announcement or current support documentation confirms native Dolby Vision output for the PS5 family in the supplied evidence.

Check Sony’s PS5 system-software page and the installed version under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. A future firmware update could change the answer, but it should be confirmed by official release notes, a support page or a new console setting—not by a TV indicator or a rumor.
