Yes. Sony says the detachable Disc Drive needs an internet connection to pair with a compatible PS5 during setup. Sony’s guidance establishes a connection requirement for that pairing step; it does not say whether the console must stay online for later disc use.
What Sony’s internet requirement covers
Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive setup instructions say: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” Sony repeats the requirement on its Disc Drive product listing. In other words, plan to connect the console to the internet at least once when setting up the accessory.

The cited Sony pages do not explain whether an internet connection is needed after pairing. They therefore do not establish either a continuing online requirement or guaranteed offline operation for subsequent disc playback.
Check that the drive matches your PS5
The accessory is Sony Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. Sony’s US setup guide lists compatibility with PS5 model groups CFI-2000/7000, while its product listing names PS5 Digital Edition consoles in groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 (slim), plus PS5 Pro. Since the pages use different group wording, check your console’s model number against Sony’s current listing for your region before buying.

Sony says the drive plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Its US product listing says the box includes the drive, a white drive cover, two plastic horizontal stand feet, and a user manual.

Sony’s physical installation instructions call for preparing the console before attaching the drive:
- Turn off the PS5, unplug its power and other cables, and let it cool.
- Remove the relevant console cover and short feet.
- Align the drive’s clips with the holes on the console and press until the clips click into place.
- Fit the drive cover and the long feet, then reconnect the console.
- Connect the console to the internet so it can complete the drive-console pairing during setup.
Keep the cover and feet removed during installation. Sony says they are needed if you later use the console without the drive. The setup guide also includes instructions for removing the accessory.
