No. Ordinary trample does not let a creature assign excess combat damage to the defending player when it attacks a planeswalker. Only the separate ability trample over planeswalkers can let excess damage reach that planeswalker’s controller, and only after its damage-assignment requirements are met.
What ordinary trample does when you attack a planeswalker
Ordinary trample does not carry damage through a planeswalker to its controller. Under rule 702.19f of Wizards of the Coast’s Comprehensive Rules, a creature without trample over planeswalkers cannot assign any of its combat damage to the defending player while attacking a planeswalker. That remains true even if the creature could assign more damage than the planeswalker has loyalty, or if the planeswalker has been removed from combat.
In general, trample allows an attacker that has assigned lethal damage to all its blockers to assign remaining damage among those blockers and the player, planeswalker, or battle it is attacking. The defending player is not the creature’s attack target in this case, so ordinary trample does not make that player eligible to receive the excess.
How trample over planeswalkers is different
Trample over planeswalkers is a distinct ability, not an implication of ordinary trample. When a creature with it attacks a planeswalker, its controller must assign lethal damage to all blockers and damage at least equal to the planeswalker’s loyalty to that planeswalker. Only remaining excess may then be assigned among the blockers, the planeswalker, and that planeswalker’s controller.

- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
The loyalty requirement is based on damage assigned to the planeswalker during that combat damage step, including damage assigned to it by other creatures. Effects that change how much damage is actually dealt do not change this assignment check.
What if blockers or the planeswalker leave combat?
There are no blockers when damage is assigned
If a trampling creature was blocked but no creatures are blocking it when damage is assigned, it assigns damage as though lethal damage had been assigned to all blockers. That rule does not override the restriction on ordinary trample when the creature is attacking a planeswalker.

The planeswalker is removed from combat
For a creature with trample over planeswalkers, if the planeswalker it is attacking is removed from combat, the creature may assign damage to the defending player after assigning lethal damage to its blockers. If there are no blockers at that point, all its damage is assigned to that player. This does not change whom the creature attacked. An ordinary trampler still cannot assign its combat damage to the defending player in this situation.
