Sometimes—but a VPS is faster only when your current hosting is the bottleneck and the new server is properly sized and configured. Switching plans will not fix slow code, database queries, oversized images, or an external service that is holding up a page.
What a VPS can—and cannot—speed up
A VPS gives a site resources in a virtual server environment that can be configured for its workload. It may help when the existing hosting cannot handle the site’s requests reliably, but the label “VPS” is not a speed guarantee. Performance also depends on application code, database work, caching, server software, PHP configuration, network conditions, and the distance between the server and its visitors.
For a page load, the time users experience reflects the combined delays of the services involved and the order in which the application calls them, as the WordPress Hosting Handbook’s performance guidance explains. A faster server can only address the parts of that chain it actually controls.
Find out what is making the site slow
A high time to first byte (TTFB)—the time until the browser receives the first byte of a response—is a clue, not proof that the hosting plan is at fault. OVHcloud’s support guide, last updated November 17, 2025, notes that a CMS may need to run PHP, query a database, or perform other internal work before it can send a response. Slow queries can therefore raise TTFB even when the hosting plan is not the cause. OVHcloud also identifies overloaded shared infrastructure and requests that take too long or do too much work as possible sources of delay; its characterization that most delays come from the website reflects its own support experience, not an industry-wide statistic. See OVHcloud’s slow-website diagnostic guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Compare a slow page with a simple file. If a basic independent file responds quickly but a particular page does not, investigate the application and the services that page uses before changing plans.
- Test from another device or connection. This can help distinguish a site-side issue from a problem limited to one device or network.
- Check for provider incidents. An active infrastructure problem may explain slow responses without indicating that a permanent move is needed.
- Inspect the application path. Review scripts and plugins, database queries, application and server logs, PHP version and runtime, outgoing API requests, image sizes, and page-cache settings.
If a page waits on a plugin, an unoptimized query, a large image, or an external API, moving that same work to a VPS does not remove the underlying delay. OVHcloud’s guide gives a conditional figure of 800 ms: it says TTFB does not exceed that value when its shared hosting infrastructure is not overloaded and the website is optimized. That is an OVHcloud statement about those conditions, not a universal target, guarantee, or comparison with VPS hosting.
Try optimizations that avoid repeated work
Use caching where it fits
Caching reuses previously computed results instead of doing the same work for every page view, according to the WordPress Hosting Handbook. Full-page caching can let public pages be served without invoking PHP or the database on every request. Browser caching or direct delivery can also reduce repeated work for static files.

WordPress sites need deliberate rules: public pages may be suitable for full-page caching, but personalized pages—such as carts, checkout flows, and user profiles—should not be treated as ordinary public pages. Set appropriate exclusions and make sure expiry and purge rules keep cached content current.
Use a CDN for the right kind of delay
A content delivery network (CDN) can reduce geographic network latency by serving content from an endpoint nearer to a visitor. But if the CDN does not cache a page at the edge, it still has to fetch that page from the origin server; that extra step may increase TTFB rather than reduce it. A CDN is therefore not automatically faster for dynamic, origin-generated pages. Its value depends on where visitors are and what content its caching rules can safely serve.

When moving to a VPS is worth considering
Consider a VPS when diagnostics and site optimizations leave evidence that the current hosting environment is limiting the workload—for example, the service remains slow under the site’s normal demand and the existing solution no longer meets its needs. OVHcloud likewise suggests considering VPS or dedicated infrastructure after diagnostic and optimization steps fail to resolve persistent slowness. That is a reason to evaluate an upgrade, not evidence that a VPS will always outperform shared hosting.
There is no controlled VPS-versus-shared speed benchmark established in the official sources cited here, so a specific speed gain cannot be promised. OVHcloud also says its PHP-FPM engine can be “up to 50 times more efficient” than PHP CGI for its tasks with a recent PHP version and stable runtime. That provider claim concerns engine task efficiency; it does not mean a website will load 50 times faster.

Compare VPS options against your site and audience
If the evidence points to a hosting constraint, compare plans using the same site and workload where possible. Relevant criteria include:
- Resources and I/O: available CPU, memory, storage performance, and the capacity to handle concurrent dynamic requests.
- Location and network: server region relative to the site’s visitors, along with the caching or CDN setup.
- Management and support: what configuration, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting the service includes—and what the operator must handle.
- Workload fit: whether the site’s measured response times and demand patterns justify a change, rather than a plan upgrade based on the VPS label alone.
- Total cost: weigh the service cost against the resources and management help actually needed.
A VPS can add control, but that control also means someone must configure and maintain the server unless the service includes management. The sources cited here do not establish current provider rankings or plan prices, so evaluate specific offers on current terms rather than assuming that a higher tier is inherently faster.
