YouTube Live supports 4K (2160p) at 60 fps, and YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies 10-bit video encoded with H.265/HEVC. Together, those settings support a 4K60 10-bit HDR stream—but your source, encoder, color settings and chosen ingest protocol must all support the combination. YouTube’s general support for a codec or frame rate does not mean every encoder can send 4K60 HDR.
What YouTube supports—and what 10-bit means here
YouTube’s live encoder settings list resolutions through 4K/2160p at 60 fps. Its HDR guide specifies 10-bit video, BT.2020 color and either PQ or HLG transfer characteristics; for HDR, it specifies H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported. YouTube’s official guidance is undated; the settings and HDR pages were accessed on October 3, 2026.
Bit depth and HDR are related but not interchangeable. A 10-bit signal can represent more tonal gradations than an 8-bit signal, but 10-bit alone does not make video HDR. For the HDR workflow described by YouTube, the signal also needs the appropriate color space and transfer function, and the encoder must preserve and signal them correctly.
So the practical answer is yes for a compatible 4K60 HDR chain, not yes for every codec, device or source. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP(S), but its HDR instructions narrow the 10-bit HDR path to HEVC.

Settings to plan for a 4K60 HDR stream
Codec and bitrate
For 4K60, YouTube’s undated settings page lists a 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended for the AV1/H.265 row, and a 14 Mbps minimum and 50 Mbps recommended for H.264. Because YouTube excludes AV1 from its HDR guidance, use the H.265/HEVC figure when planning this HDR workflow: 35 Mbps recommended, with 10 Mbps shown as the minimum. A minimum is not a guarantee of a stable stream; allow network headroom beyond the video bitrate for protocol overhead and fluctuations.
YouTube’s bitrate figures are encoder guidance, not a promise of identical image quality across codecs or content. Fast-moving gameplay, detailed scenes and noisy sources can be demanding. Confirm that the encoder can sustain the selected output and that the upload connection has dependable spare capacity.

Color format and HDR metadata
- Codec: H.265/HEVC.
- Bit depth: 10-bit.
- Color primaries: BT.2020.
- Transfer function: PQ or HLG. YouTube recommends HLG.
- Resolution and frame rate: 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps for 4K60.
The source must provide the HDR signal you intend to stream. An encoder cannot restore HDR detail that was absent from the source or reliably turn an ordinary SDR signal into authentic HDR just by changing an output setting.
Latency and event planning
YouTube says its 4K streams use normal latency: the option to improve for low latency is unavailable at 4K/2160p. If rapid chat interaction is central to a gaming broadcast, account for that trade-off. Test the complete source-to-YouTube chain before an event and monitor stream health during the broadcast.

Set up OBS for YouTube HDR
YouTube’s HDR instructions list OBS 30.1 or newer and a hardware HEVC encoder. Labels and available options can vary by operating system, GPU and OBS version, so check that your installed encoder exposes the required Main 10 and HDR controls rather than assuming an HEVC option is sufficient.
- Confirm the source. Make sure the camera, console or computer output is actually HDR and can provide 4K at 60 fps. If using a capture device, verify that the exact device and connection pass the source’s resolution, frame rate and HDR format.
- Set the video encoder. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select the streaming output and choose a hardware H.265/HEVC encoder that supports 10-bit Main 10. Set the profile to Main 10. If these controls are unavailable, the encoder or driver may not support the required configuration.
- Configure HDR color. In Settings → Advanced, enable HDR and select P010 (4:2:0) with Rec. 2100 PQ or Rec. 2100 HLG. YouTube recommends HLG. Ensure the source and output color settings agree; mismatched color settings can produce an incorrect image even when the stream connects.
- Set resolution and frame rate. In Settings → Video, set the base and output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and the common frame rate to 60 fps, provided the source, encoder and connection can sustain them.
- Connect the YouTube stream. In Settings → Stream, select YouTube and connect the intended channel, or enter that stream’s key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Use a supported ingest protocol. YouTube allows HDR over RTMP(S) or HLS. Its general encoder guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); YouTube says HLS can be used when an encoder does not support HDR over RTMP. Leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked as directed by YouTube’s HDR setup guidance.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check the received resolution, frame rate, HDR appearance and stream-health indicators before a public event. Confirm the encoder remains stable under gameplay load and that the upload connection does not fluctuate.
YouTube notes that Windows 11 Auto HDR may be a possible route when an HDR monitor is present. That does not establish that every game, system or capture path will produce a suitable HDR source; verify the actual signal and result.

RTMP(S) versus HLS for HDR
YouTube states that HDR can be sent over either RTMP(S) or HLS. Which one you can use depends on the encoder and its HDR support. For RTMP(S), YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.265/HEVC for this workflow. If an encoder cannot send HDR over RTMP, HLS is an option only if the encoder implements YouTube’s HLS requirements.
For hardware HLS setups, YouTube’s HDR guide specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. These are implementation requirements for the HLS path, not settings that can be substituted into an ordinary RTMP setup. Follow the current documentation for the exact encoder as well as YouTube’s instructions.

How to check whether an encoder or capture chain is suitable
Judge the exact model and configuration, not a product-family headline. Before buying or relying on equipment, check these items in its current manufacturer documentation:
- Can it encode or pass through 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps?
- Does it support HEVC Main 10 and 10-bit HDR—not merely HEVC or 4K output?
- Can it handle BT.2020 with PQ or HLG, including the required HDR signaling?
- Does it support HDR through your selected RTMP(S) or HLS route? If HLS, can it meet YouTube’s playlist, segment and HTTPS requirements?
- Can the computer, hardware encoder and upload connection sustain the intended bitrate while the game or production is running?
- Is the device a hardware appliance, software encoder or cloud service, and does its actual input path match your source?
YouTube’s encoder directory describes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as streaming up to 2160p60 directly to YouTube and AWS Elemental MediaLive as supporting live streaming up to 4Kp60 HEVC. Those directory descriptions do not, by themselves, verify every 10-bit HDR requirement for a particular model or configuration. YouTube also notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications before purchase.
A capture card is not universally required. Whether you need one depends on whether the source is a camera, console or computer, and on how the chosen encoder receives video.
YouTube Live rules that still apply to HDR gameplay
Technical compatibility does not grant rights to broadcast the content. A 4K60 HDR stream remains subject to YouTube’s copyright rules and the permissions attached to the game, music, overlays and other material in the broadcast. Check the game publisher’s streaming policy and use music you are authorized to broadcast; a game’s inclusion of licensed music does not necessarily give streamers separate streaming rights. YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies are also distinct from whether an encoder can deliver HDR. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before going live.

Troubleshooting a 4K60 10-bit stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HDR or 10-bit options are missing | The selected encoder, driver or output path does not expose HEVC Main 10 or HDR controls. | Verify the exact hardware encoder and current driver support Main 10, P010 and the chosen HDR transfer function. YouTube’s OBS guidance calls for OBS 30.1 or newer and a hardware HEVC encoder. |
| The stream connects but looks washed out or incorrectly colored | Source and output color settings or HDR signaling may not match. | Check that the source is HDR and that the output uses P010 (4:2:0), Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, and BT.2020 signaling. Test the end-to-end result before an event. |
| Resolution or frame rate drops, or the stream becomes unstable | The encoder, system load or network may not sustain 4K60 at the chosen bitrate. | Check encoder load and stream health; confirm stable upload capacity with headroom. Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s published 4K60 recommendations rather than treating the minimum as a target. |
| HDR does not work over the selected protocol | The encoder may not support HDR over that ingest route. | YouTube allows RTMP(S) or HLS for HDR. Try the supported route in the encoder documentation; for hardware HLS, confirm the segment, rolling-playlist and HTTPS requirements. |
| Chat interaction feels delayed | 4K streams use normal latency on YouTube. | Plan around normal latency for a 4K broadcast; YouTube does not offer its low-latency option at 4K/2160p. |
