Yes. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That applies to the live feed YouTube receives, including a feed made from pre-recorded video. Your source file or encoder creates the incoming stream; YouTube then processes it for delivery. YouTube’s public guidance does not say whether pre-recorded and camera-originated inputs follow different internal processing paths.
What “re-encode” means in a live stream
There are two separate stages to distinguish. First, a creator or streaming tool encodes the source video into a live input feed and sends it to YouTube. Second, YouTube ingests that feed and transcodes the live stream into output formats for viewers. YouTube describes the latter process explicitly in its live encoder settings guidance.
So, if you play a recording through a live encoder, YouTube receives a live stream—not simply the original file—and transcodes that stream for delivery. The encoder’s chosen bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec describe the incoming feed; they do not establish that every viewer receives that exact encoding unchanged.
What YouTube’s settings do—and do not—promise
YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec and resolution. For example, at 1080p/30 fps, it recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are recommendations for the encoder’s input to YouTube, not guarantees about a viewer-side output encoding or quality rung.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube says encoder settings are detected automatically by default. Check the official settings page when configuring a stream, since recommendations can change. The page says YouTube creates multiple output formats, but it does not establish one universal output codec or resolution ladder for every stream.
Does a pre-recorded source change the answer?
The cited YouTube guidance does not describe a separate transcoding path for pre-recorded video versus a camera feed. The supported conclusion is that the live stream YouTube receives is transcoded for delivery; it is not possible to claim from that guidance that both input types are identical at every internal processing stage.

Likewise, an archived live stream is not promised to be a bit-for-bit copy of the source file. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder workflow instructions, but that archive guidance does not promise preservation of the original file’s encoding.
Practical setup for streaming a recording
- Prepare the live input. Use a streaming encoder or service to turn the recording into a live feed sent to YouTube. Your source file’s properties alone do not specify the encoding YouTube ingests.
- Match the current YouTube recommendations. Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s settings table. At 1080p/30 fps, the stated recommendations are 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264.
- Set keyframes appropriately. Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- Test and monitor. YouTube recommends testing before going live, previewing the stream in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health. Its live streaming tips recommend professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; hardware does not bypass YouTube’s transcoding.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded video or playlist you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It sends the uploaded video as a live stream; YouTube still handles its own live-stream transcoding.
