Donkey Kong Bananza makes smashing the world its central mechanic—and turns that destruction into a way to explore, solve problems, and find more to do. The result is a confident 3D platform adventure with memorable underground regions and a strong case for Switch 2 owners who enjoy exploration and collectibles. Its repeated demolition can wear thin, though, and Nintendo Life’s review noted technical hiccups.
What is Donkey Kong Bananza like?
Donkey Kong Bananza is an all-new 3D platforming action-adventure exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Donkey Kong and Pauline descend into an underground world where you punch, grab, toss, climb, and smash terrain to uncover routes and spaces. It launched on July 17, 2025, and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes, according to Nintendo’s product page.
The destruction is more than a combat gimmick: breaking terrain can reveal hidden items, open a path, or create something to throw or ride. Dive Punch drills into the earth, while Hand Slap helps locate hidden items. Collecting gold builds Bananergy, which lets Pauline’s singing trigger temporary transformations. Kong form emphasizes strength, Zebra form speed, and Ostrich form flight. Banandium Gems award Skill Points; other collectibles and shops add item and cosmetic progression. These mechanics are detailed in Nintendo’s gameplay announcement.
Why the underground layers work
The game’s strongest idea is the relationship between movement and the environment: you can change the terrain as you look for a way forward. Nintendo Life reviewer Jim Norman praised the layers’ distinct identities, smooth movement, musical cues, collectibles, and challenge courses. In his view, the adventure becomes more than a smashathon because platforming and the way each layer uses its surroundings keep the experience varied.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
- A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
- Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
- Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more
- Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together
Where the fun can fade
Destruction is also the main risk. Norman found that punching everything grows repetitive when it becomes the whole activity; the game is more engaging when smashing serves a purpose, such as uncovering a route or enabling exploration. Players who would rather move through a tightly controlled platforming course than search and collect may be less taken with Bananza’s central loop.
Is Donkey Kong Bananza worth it?
For players who want a substantial 3D platform adventure built around exploration, Bananza is an easy recommendation. Nintendo Life’s European-version review, published July 16, 2025, gave it 9/10, or “Excellent.” Norman reported spending roughly 35 hours collecting around 600 Banandium Gems, with more collectibles left to find. That is his playthrough, not a guaranteed completion time or an official estimate.
Rank #2
- Embark on a brand-new Donkey Kong adventure exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the Underground World with dynamic environments and hidden secrets.
- Battle VoidCo and its minions using DK’s signature strength and powerful punches.
- Team up with a mysterious new companion with unique gameplay abilities.
- Recover the Golden Bananas across thrilling, action-packed levels.
Norman’s conclusion called the game “an almighty re-introduction to the world of 3D platforming for DK, and arguably the Switch 2’s first absolute must-play.” That is the reviewer’s editorial judgment, not an objective measure: the strongest fit is for players who enjoy uncovering secrets, collecting, and experimenting with routes through destructible spaces.
Performance caveat
The same 2025 review reported camera difficulties while digging, distant texture loss and pop-in, and frame-rate drops in demanding late-game areas. A second opinion cited technical hiccups and occasional directional confusion. These are observations from the review period, not a statement about the game’s current patched performance.

Can you play Donkey Kong Bananza co-op?
Nintendo lists single-system play for one to two players, and local co-op lets a second player control Pauline. The product page also lists GameShare options; online features are subject to Nintendo’s stated system, account, internet, and membership requirements. Check Nintendo’s product page for the applicable details.
Does Donkey Kong Bananza support amiibo?
Amiibo is optional. Nintendo says the Donkey Kong and Pauline figure can unlock Pauline’s Diva Dress early and provide KONG tiles. According to Nintendo Support, compatible Donkey Kong series amiibo summon gold KONG tiles, while other amiibo summon a sphere containing random materials. You do not need the figure to play the game.
