To get through Donkey Kong Bananza, treat the terrain as part of DK’s moveset: break or lift material, use the right chunk to clear obstacles, and search the environment for Banandium Gems that fund upgrades. Match each Bananza transformation to the obstacle in front of you, and turn on Assist Mode or bring in a second player if you want more support. This guide covers the core systems and optional postgame content without guessing at unverified gem routes or puzzle solutions.

How do I get through Donkey Kong Bananza?

Progress comes from combining movement, destruction, and exploration. Punch through material you can break, remove chunks where the terrain allows it, and use those chunks as weapons, projectiles, or temporary footing. When an obstacle resists your current approach, inspect its material and consider a transformation suited to it rather than repeating the same move.

Use the controls that fit the obstacle

  • Y: punch.
  • X: punch upward.
  • B: punch downward.
  • A: jump.
  • ZR: grab terrain. A quick press can lift softer material; harder material may need a longer hold. Some terrain is too sturdy to pick up.
  • While holding a chunk: press Y to swing it or ZR to throw it.
  • ZL: activate Turf Surf.

Chunks have more than one use: swing one at a nearby target, throw it at a distant obstacle, or use terrain-based moves such as Chunk Jump and Turf Surf to traverse the area. The material matters. Nintendo’s tips explain that a stone chunk can break mud, while mud thrown at stone may stick instead. Hold ZR while aiming at terrain to zoom in and see its material name; choose a chunk that can affect the target rather than assuming every material works everywhere. Nintendo summarizes the constraint plainly: “The harder the terrain, the more difficult it is to tear a piece off.” (Nintendo’s official tips)

When punching is not enough

Some routes and targets call for a different move: a dive punch, hand slap, chunk throw, or a chunk torn from certain enemies. Look at the obstacle and the nearby terrain together. A useful piece of material may be within reach even if the target itself cannot be grabbed.

How do Banandium Gems work?

Banandium Gems are both collectibles and a progression resource. They can be hidden in walls, the ground, and other places, and challenge ruins can award them. Collect five gems to receive one Skill Point. Skill Points can improve health, increase power, or unlock skills; Nintendo’s tips give Punch Power, which reduces the punches needed to break tougher terrain, as one example.

Choose upgrades around the problem you are encountering: more health if survival is the bottleneck, punch power if hard terrain is slowing progress, or a new skill if it suits your approach. The official material does not establish one universally best build, nor does it provide a complete gem map, layer-by-layer locations, or a total collectible count.

Other things to collect

  • Gold: exchange it for items at the Stuff Shop.
  • Fossils: trade them for outfits at Style Shops. Outfits can provide benefits as well as change DK’s appearance.

What does each Bananza transformation do?

Transformations consume Bananergy and do not last forever, so activate one when its capability can help with the route or fight at hand. The practical choice is the one that addresses the obstacle, not an assumed ranking of strength.

Transformation Best suited to What it does
Kong Bananza Hard or tough material Provides destructive power against tougher terrain, including concrete.
Zebra Bananza Water, crumbling paths, or slick surfaces Moves quickly over water and crumbling terrain, with better traction on slick surfaces.
Ostrich Bananza Gaps, updrafts, or aerial attacks Flies, uses updrafts, and drops Egg Bombs.

Pauline’s song is part of this system: it can show the way forward, remove strange seals, and activate Bananza transformations. Keep an eye on the Bananergy gauge as you use a form; the official pages do not specify exact transformation durations or damage values.

  • Uncover a wide variety of environments, like forest, canyon, and lagoon, as you delve underground

Should I use Assist Mode?

Assist Mode is designed for new players and for anyone who wants a more forgiving pace. Its listed support includes aim assist, path guidance, reduced damage, and regenerating health. Use it if aiming, navigation, or staying alive is getting in the way of enjoying the game; it is a supported way to play, not a measure of skill.

How do I play co-op?

Two-player co-op unlocks after you rescue Odd Rock. Player one controls DK, while player two controls Odd Rock or Pauline depending on story progress; the companion rides on DK’s shoulder. On Joy-Con 2, player two can use mouse controls for more precise aiming.
