In Donkey Kong Bananza, Pauline’s singing lets Donkey Kong take on temporary animal forms: Zebra Bananza for fast ground-and-water traversal, and Ostrich Bananza for flight and aerial attacks. They’re gameplay powers—not animal companions—and gold helps replenish the energy needed to use them again.
Why Donkey Kong turns into a zebra and an ostrich
Pauline’s singing activates Bananza transformations that Donkey Kong learns from the game’s giant Elders. The forms give him different abilities for getting through the environment and dealing with enemies. Nintendo’s official Bananza transformations page describes both forms and how their energy works.
The premise is fantastical; Nintendo’s descriptions explain what the forms do, but do not give a biological rationale for why DK can become a zebra or an ostrich.
What each transformation does

Choose based on the obstacle or task: Zebra Bananza is the ground-and-water option, while Ostrich Bananza gives DK an aerial route and an attack from above. Nintendo does not describe either form as universally better.

How long the forms last
Bananza transformations are temporary. Collecting gold builds Bananergy, the resource Pauline needs to activate a transformation again. The official descriptions do not provide a published duration or transformation-specific numerical performance figures.

The optional Donkey Kong & Pauline amiibo can provide Pauline’s Diva Dress outfit early, but the outfit is also obtainable through game progression.
