Hook, Line and Inker added ocean fishing to Don’t Starve Together. To catch ocean fish, use the Sea Fishing Rod: cast near visible fish shadows, wait for a bite, set the hook, then reel according to the rod’s position as the fish struggles. What Hook, Line and Inker added
Klei released Hook, Line and Inker on December 12, 2019, alongside that year’s Winter’s Feast. Its update announcement described new ocean life and cooking recipes, plus craftable fishing equipment: the Sea Fishing Rod, Tackle Receptacle, and Fish Scale-O-Matic for displaying catches. It also said pond fish were replaced with Freshwater Fish, which can be weighed or killed for meat. Klei’s December 12 update announcement is the primary source for those release features.
A December 6, 2019 announcement named Steam, Xbox One, and WeGame as platforms scheduled to receive the update on December 12. That is historical release information, not confirmation of current platform availability.
How to catch ocean fish
The Sea Fishing Rod is specifically for ocean fishing. The community-maintained Sea Fishing Rod reference describes a sequence built around casting, watching for a bite, setting the hook, and reeling during the fish’s struggle.

- Equip a Sea Fishing Rod. The rod has slots for a float and a lure; the cited reference says both can be fitted.
- Choose attachments for the task. Floats affect casting range and accuracy. Lures attract ocean fish.
- Cast near visible fish shadows. The reference recommends targeting shadows in the ocean.
- Wait for a bite and set the hook. Once a fish bites, begin the catch sequence.
- Reel in response to the struggle. The rod’s position indicates how to reel as the fish fights; avoid treating this as a simple uninterrupted pull.
The reference says the Sea Fishing Rod cannot catch freshwater pond fish or cave eels. Those are separate fishing contexts, so use the appropriate freshwater or cave method rather than expecting ocean gear to work for them. These mechanics and instructions come from a community-maintained reference, not a current official patch note; behavior may differ in a later game build.
What the Tackle Receptacle does
The Tackle Receptacle is a crafting structure, not the rod itself. According to the community-maintained Tackle Receptacle reference, players standing nearby can prototype recipes for floats and lures. The page lists a Driftwood Piece, Bone Shards, and an Electrical Doodad as its crafting materials, and says a Science Machine is required to prototype it.

The same reference documents an older recipe, a reminder that crafting requirements can change. Check the recipe shown in your current game before gathering materials; the listed ingredients are not guaranteed to match every build.
Choosing a float and lure
These attachments serve different purposes rather than competing for the same benefit. A float affects how far and accurately the line can be cast; a lure attracts ocean fish. The references do not establish a reliable, current numerical ranking of individual options, so choose based on the casting conditions or attraction you need rather than assuming one combination is universally best.
