The Shield Saw is more than a shield: block when you need cover, time a block against a glowing Hell Surge attack to parry it, charge to close distance or evade danger, and throw it to hit enemies or break heated metal armor. Matching each move and weapon to the threat is more useful than holding block or relying on one attack.
What should a new player know about the Shield Saw?
Bethesda’s beginner tips and Shield Saw guide describe it as a tool for blocking, parrying, deflecting, charging and throwing. Think of the action as a response to the situation, rather than one move you should use constantly:
- Block when an attack is about to hit and you need immediate protection.
- Parry by timing a Shield Saw block against an eligible attack, turning the defense into a counter.
- Charge to move quickly toward a target or get out of danger.
- Throw to hit a demon at range, interrupt a larger one, or exploit a vulnerable armor state.
A throw can cut through lesser demons or lodge in a larger demon and stun it. Outside combat, designated environmental nodes can also be struck with the Shield Saw to activate mechanisms or trigger a Recall Jump.
How do you parry, and which attacks can be parried?
Watch for the telltale glow that marks a parryable Hell Surge attack. Block with the Shield Saw at the right moment: a successful parry sends the attack back and can crack open the demon’s defenses. Bethesda describes parrying as applying to certain attacks, not every incoming blow.

Parrying also helps replenish melee charges, according to Bethesda’s advanced tips. Once you recognize the glow, a well-timed parry can defend you while setting up another attack. If you are struggling to read the cue or hit the timing, the Accessibility settings offer ways to make parryable attacks easier to distinguish and adjust the parry window.
What is the difference between a blue shield and metal armor?
Enemy defenses call for different answers. Blue energy shields respond to plasma; metal defenses need to be heated before the Shield Saw can break them.

The metal sequence matters: throwing before the armor flashes misses the described opening. These weapon responses come from Bethesda’s advanced combat tips.
When should you throw the Shield Saw instead of charging?
Both actions use the Shield Saw, but they solve different problems. A throw is an attack; a charge is primarily a fast movement option.

Outside combat, a throw can also interact with designated environmental nodes, so it is worth noticing marked mechanisms while exploring.
How do blocking and melee affect your resources?
The Shield Saw can be overloaded: taking too much damage while blocking temporarily disables it. Keep an eye on its condition meter, and use strafing and timed parries to avoid relying on continuous blocking.

Melee attacks have a second job beyond dealing close-range damage. The Flail and other melee weapons can be chained into combos, but their charges are limited. Melee strikes replenish ammunition across weapons; parrying Hell Surge attacks helps restore melee charges. That makes the two actions part of a useful combat loop: land melee strikes to refill ammunition, then look for a parry opportunity to help recover melee charges.

Some demon groups include a tougher Leader Demon. Bethesda’s beginner guide says defeating one grants Essence that permanently increases one of your maximum reserves: Health, Armor or ammunition. It is a strategic reward for taking on the leader, not a promise that all three reserves increase at once.
Which settings can make parrying easier?
Bethesda’s Accessibility Guide describes difficulty presets and gameplay modifiers for adjusting the parry window, projectile speed and overall game speed. It also lists parry recoloring and Shield Throw Seek, which can assist with targeting enemies or interactable objects. For the current labels and available options on your build, inspect the in-game Gameplay and Accessibility menus; names can vary by platform or update.
Bethesda’s Update 2 release notes state: “Added ability to interrupt weapon bring-up and Shield Charge recovery animations sooner to perform a block or parry”. This describes that update’s change, not a universal timing guarantee for every platform or later build.
