How to get the classic Doomguy face in DOOM: The Dark Ages
- Open Settings.
- Select UI, then HUD options.
- Open Face Avatar Style.
- Choose Classic.
This menu path is reported in Kevin Thielenhaus’s May 15, 2025 Gameranx guide; it has not been independently verified here. The guide describes the selectable avatar as a pixel-style Classic Doom Guy face.

How the new face compares with the original Doom HUD
The original DOOM placed the Doomguy portrait in the center of the HUD along the bottom edge, surrounded by status and weapon information. A 2015 GDC presentation labels its example “Doom (id Software, 1993),” providing a visual reference for the classic interface: The Design In: The Art and Function of the DOOM HUD.
In The Dark Ages, the default face is a blue holographic Slayer. Gameranx says it turns left and right and reacts to damage, and describes its look as mirroring the old-school Doomguy face. The Classic setting changes the avatar to a pixel-style version. Those descriptions establish a clear visual callback, not an exact recreation; the sources do not demonstrate pixel-level identity or explain the technical design of either avatar.

Why the reference fits The Dark Ages
Bethesda’s January 23, 2025 Developer_Direct transcript identifies The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016). Game Director Hugo Martin said the prequel gave the team “the opportunity to re-imagine every aspect of this experience.” That provides broad context for a game that revisits the series’ past while presenting it through a different setting and interface; it is not a specific explanation of the face-avatar choice.
The game was released May 15, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, according to the same official transcript. The face option is a HUD setting, not an accessory requirement.
