Doom: The Dark Ages is worth considering if you want a forceful, single-player Doom built around a shield-led, more grounded combat rhythm. It is not simply Doom Eternal with a new setting: the shift in pace and control is the key question for players deciding whether its approach suits them.
Is Doom: The Dark Ages worth playing?
The strongest case for Doom: The Dark Ages is its deliberate combat redesign. The shield is more than a defensive prop: its interactions with enemies and materials help shape fights, while the broader control scheme aims to be less demanding than Doom Eternal’s weapon-and-button juggling. If you enjoy aggressive combat but would rather focus on a tighter set of contextual tools, that shift may make the game appealing. If what you prize most is constant aerial movement and improvisational weapon switching, the heavier rhythm may be less satisfying.
The game is a single-player action prequel to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. Steam’s listing identifies it as a prequel.
How does Doom: The Dark Ages compare with Doom Eternal?
The change is one of emphasis, not a move away from depth. In a January 23, 2025 interview on the PlayStation Blog, game director Hugo Martin said the team wanted “the depth of Eternal’s loop with the simplicity of Doom (2016)’s control scheme.” He described shield behavior that changes with what it hits: it can ricochet off plasma shields, stick in flesh, or shatter armor.

PC Gamer’s July 2026 retrospective is one critic’s view of the base game’s turn away from the speed and mobility of the previous modern entries, not a measured consensus.
What did reviewers praise?
Bethesda’s official review round-up features selected excerpts from outlets including IGN, GameSpot, But Why Tho, The Nerd Stash, PlayStation Universe, and Destructoid. The excerpts praise areas such as gunplay, visuals, exploration, intensity, and the game’s new direction. Bethesda reproduces IGN’s line, “id has once again proven that like a super shotgun blast from point blank range, they don’t miss,” and GameSpot’s “A bold new direction without straying from its captivating roots.” Those are publisher-selected quotations, not an independent aggregate or a complete picture of critical opinion.

Bethesda Support gives May 15, 2025 as the official launch date for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through the Xbox App and Steam, and PlayStation 5. Steam’s listing displays May 14, 2025; the cited sources do not indicate a substantive version difference behind the storefront date display.

For streaming, Bethesda’s FAQ lists xCloud, Steam, GeForce NOW, and Boosteroid. Its xCloud option requires Game Pass Ultimate. Bethesda says the game received Steam Deck Verified status on October 15, 2025; that certification does not guarantee identical performance across handheld PCs, where results vary with device, settings, and power.

Should you choose it over Doom Eternal?
- Consider The Dark Ages if the idea of a shield-led toolkit, contextual combat, and a more grounded pace appeals to you.
- Lean toward Eternal if speed, high mobility, and frequent weapon switching are central to what you enjoy about modern Doom.
- Keep the expansion in context: PC Gamer’s July 2026 retrospective discusses the later Revelations expansion separately; its Chain Spear and added mobility change the combat experience, so that assessment should not be treated as a launch-era review of the base game.
