DOOM: The Dark Ages Ripatorium Performance Settings to Change

For better PC performance in DOOM: The Dark Ages, check hardware and NVMe installation, then measure graphics changes with Benchmark Mode. Ripatorium settings customize encounters, not a proven FPS fix.

If you mean the customizable arena in DOOM: The Dark Ages, its official name is the Ripatorium—the game’s notes call it “Slaughter Mode” only informally. For better PC performance, start with hardware and installation checks, then use the built-in Benchmark Mode to test graphics changes one at a time. Ripatorium enemy and wave settings shape the encounter; official notes do not establish that changing them will improve frame rate.

What settings should you change for better FPS?

There is no single best graphics preset for every PC. Bethesda’s published tiers are targets, not independent benchmark results. First check whether your hardware is a match for the resolution and quality you want, then measure changes on your own system.

Published PC tier Target Dedicated VRAM System RAM GPU and storage
Minimum 1080p / 60 FPS / Low 8GB 16GB Hardware ray-tracing-capable NVIDIA or AMD GPU; NVMe storage
Recommended 1440p / 60 FPS / High 10GB 32GB Hardware ray-tracing-capable NVIDIA or AMD GPU; NVMe storage
Ultra 4K 2160p / 60 FPS / Ultra 16GB 32GB Hardware ray-tracing-capable NVIDIA or AMD GPU; NVMe storage

These are Bethesda’s stated PC requirement targets, not a guarantee that every system meeting a tier will hold 60 FPS in every scene. Bethesda says a hardware ray-tracing-compatible GPU is required even at minimum settings. See Bethesda’s PC system requirements for the current full specifications.

Make the first graphics change a broad quality reduction

If the game runs poorly, Bethesda recommends lowering the in-game graphics quality. Start there rather than assuming a particular individual option is always the bottleneck: the official support guidance does not prescribe a universal order of settings to reduce. After each change, compare the same benchmark route at the same resolution so the result is meaningful.

Use dynamic resolution and upscaling only when your GPU supports them

Bethesda’s July 7, 2026 Update 4 notes say PC versions of DLSS, FSR and XeSS support dynamic resolution scaling. The notes also add DLSS 4.5 5x and 6x Frame Generation modes for compatible GPUs. Availability depends on graphics hardware and the selected feature; these notes do not establish that every option works on every PC, or that these settings apply to consoles. Check the Update 4 release notes and your GPU’s supported features before selecting one.

How to stop DOOM: The Dark Ages from stuttering on PC

Bethesda says, “Most issues related to game performance can be attributed to hardware.” That makes it sensible to rule out system fit and setup problems before chasing a fine-grained preset. Its PC performance troubleshooting guide covers these checks:

  1. Check the requirements and install drive. Confirm your PC is a reasonable match for the game’s target tier, and verify that the game is installed on an NVMe SSD. Bethesda specifies NVMe storage; this is a requirement check, not a promise that changing drives will cure every stutter.
  2. Enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Check the Windows graphics settings for this option.
  3. Close unnecessary apps and disable overlays. Shut down background programs you do not need while playing and turn off overlays to reduce potential interference.
  4. Update your graphics drivers. Install a current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer.
  5. Lower the game’s graphics quality. Reduce the in-game quality setting, then test performance again.
  6. Verify the game files. Use the file-verification option in the launcher where the game is installed.
  7. Check GPU selection and power mode. Make sure the game uses the primary GPU and that the system is set to a performance-oriented power profile. On a laptop, confirm the discrete GPU is selected and connect power when appropriate.
  8. Recover from changes that made things worse. If manual video-setting changes reduce performance or cause problems, restore the game’s auto-detected video settings and retest.

How to benchmark DOOM: The Dark Ages settings

Use the built-in Benchmark Mode to compare your actual PC rather than relying on a preset recommendation. The June 18, 2025 PC update describes a consistent, nearly deterministic benchmark route and graphs for FPS, total frame time, CPU frame time and GPU frame time.

  1. From the main menu, open Extras, then select Benchmark Mode.
  2. Run the benchmark once with your current settings and note the FPS and frame-time graphs as a baseline.
  3. Change one video setting, keeping resolution and the benchmark route unchanged.
  4. Run the same benchmark again. Compare FPS alongside total, CPU and GPU frame times, and consider whether the image-quality trade-off is acceptable.
  5. Keep a change only if it improves the result you care about. If it does not, restore the original setting before testing another one.

The benchmark’s repeatable route makes before-and-after comparisons more useful, but it is still a test of that route on your hardware—not proof of identical performance in every fight. Bethesda’s June 2025 PC update notes describe the mode and its graphs.

What does Slaughter Mode mean in DOOM: The Dark Ages?

The mode is officially called the Ripatorium. Its settings control the combat scenario—such as enemy composition, rounds, respawns, timers and pickups—rather than the PC’s graphics workload. Updates 3 and 4 added encounter options, but the official notes do not quantify the FPS effect of enemy population, wave count or continuous spawning. Choose those options for the challenge you want, not as a documented performance fix.

Round-based setup and difficulty presets

Update 3 made the Ripatorium round-based. Players can configure up to five rounds, with as many as 10 respawn waves per round, set time limits, and choose Medium, Challenging or Sadistic presets. See the Update 3 release notes for the official changes.
