Dota 2 Roles Explained: Carry, Mid, Offlane, Soft Support, and Hard Support

Dota 2’s five positions describe how a team divides lane access, farm priority, and responsibilities—not five fixed kinds of heroes. Position 1 usually gets the most room to farm; positions 4 and 5 generally operate with less guaranteed income and contribute more utility. The exact lane and job can change with the hero, draft, matchup, and state of the game.

What do positions 1 through 5 mean?

The numbers are shorthand for relative farm priority and the responsibilities a player tends to take on. They do not dictate a hero’s entire game plan, and they are not the same thing as Valve’s functional hero labels.

Position Common name Typical farm priority Common contribution
1 Carry Highest Uses farm to scale into sustained damage or objective pressure.
2 Mid High Takes the middle lane and develops an independent level and item curve.
3 Offlane Core priority, generally behind positions 1 and 2 Contests the opposing carry’s lane and may bring frontline presence, initiation, control, or utility.
4 Soft support Lower, with some access to resources Often helps the offlane or roams to create plays with control, utility, or saves.
5 Hard support Lowest Often supports the carry’s lane and contributes vision, lane help, saves, or other utility.

These are conventions, not rules for every match. Teams can adjust lanes and resource priorities to suit a draft or respond to a difficult matchup.

Hero roles and positions are different

In Valve’s Hero Browser, Carry and Support are functional filters, with further tags such as Nuker or Jungler; these are guidance about how a hero can function, not a numbered position assignment. See Valve’s Reborn announcement.

Valve’s historical role-queue description, on the International 2018 Battle Pass page, names Safe, Mid, Offlane, and Support as lane preferences and says players could choose a hero that fit the team’s needs. That page documents a past feature, not today’s queue interface. The distinction still helps: lane preference is not a hero class, and a hero’s capabilities do not uniquely determine its position.

For example, Valve’s Puck page lists both Carry and Support tags. That does not mean Puck must be played as either position 1 or position 5; it illustrates that a hero can have more than one functional label.

What does each Dota 2 position do?

Position 1: Carry

The carry usually receives substantial access to farm so the hero can build items and become a major threat as the game develops. A Valve-hosted Carry build example discusses farming efficiency, lane pressure, scaling item progression, and combat. It is one hero-specific, patch-sensitive build—not a universal prescription.

“Carry” does not guarantee a particular timing, lane, or damage type. The hero, available farm, and state of the match determine when and how the position contributes.

Position 2: Mid

The mid takes the middle lane and often builds an independent level and item curve. A common pattern is to use that early development to pressure side lanes, but Valve’s role-queue description establishes Mid as a lane preference, not a fixed roaming schedule or universal playbook.

Position 3: Offlane

The offlaner commonly contests the enemy carry’s lane. The position may provide a frontline, initiation, control, or utility, but the draft and hero determine which of those jobs matters most. Offlane is a lane preference in Valve’s historical role-queue description; it is not an official, fixed list of strategic duties.

Position 4: Soft support

The soft support often works with the offlaner or moves around the map to help create plays. With less guaranteed farm than the cores, position 4 commonly adds control, utility, or saves. The exact balance varies: some drafts need lane help, while others benefit more from movement or team-fight tools.

Position 5: Hard support

The hard support usually has the least farm priority and often helps the carry through the lane. Vision, camp blocking, mobility, and saving allies are examples of support tasks discussed in a Valve-hosted Support build example, which explicitly discusses a position 5 hero. Those are examples from a hero-specific build, not a complete rulebook for every hard support.

How do soft support and hard support differ?

The main distinction is relative resource priority and the usual focus of their work, not a strict division of support duties. Position 5 commonly takes the lowest farm priority and supports the carry’s lane; position 4 may have more room to seek resources, help the offlane, or move around the map to set up plays. Both positions provide utility, and either may need to help a lane, offer control, protect an ally, or adapt to the draft.

  • Think of position 4 as the more flexible support resource: it often looks for opportunities to influence lanes or create plays.
  • Think of position 5 as the lowest-priority support resource: it often focuses on keeping a lane functional and providing team utility.
  • Do not reduce the difference to ward buying: vision is one support task, not the definition of a position.

How should you use these role descriptions?

Use the positions as a starting point for coordinating farm and responsibilities, then let the match decide the details. A hero’s functional tags can suggest possible jobs, but they do not settle which position is right for a particular draft. Lane matchups, teammates’ needs, and game state can change who farms, who moves, and who initiates or protects.

Build advice and hero assignments can also shift with patches. Treat role descriptions as broad conventions and check current hero-specific guidance when deciding how to play a particular pick.
