The app itself is free to download. Individual itch.io projects can be free, paid, donation-supported, or distributed under other terms set by their creators.
Download itch.io 26.1.9—or the current version?
Download the current version, not 26.1.9. The number in the search title refers to an older build. Official itch.io support information from April 2026 described 26.1.9 as obsolete and referred to version 26.9.0 as the latest build at that time. That does not establish that 26.9.0 is still the newest release now, so this article does not present it as the current version.
For a normal installation or an updater that is stuck on 26.1.9:
- Open the official itch.io desktop app download page.
- Choose the installer for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Install it over the existing app, or use it as a fresh installation if the updater fails.
Avoid third-party software mirrors when obtaining the client. They may offer an old build, a repackaged installer, or a file whose authenticity is difficult to verify.

Installation
- Download the itch.io app for Windows from itch.io.
- Double-click the downloaded installer executable.
- Follow the setup prompts and launch itch when installation finishes.
The app normally chooses an installation location where your account can write files without administrator privileges. This is why games are not normally installed in Program Files. You can add or manage other library locations later through the app’s Preferences.
Check the Windows signature
The official Windows installer and application are digitally signed under the name itch corp. Before running a questionable or unexpected installer, open its file properties and inspect the digital-signature information. Do not use an executable claiming to be the itch app if it lacks the expected signature.

New app components can trigger an antivirus warning. The official Windows guidance identifies these locations as potentially involved in the app installation:

Do not automatically whitelist the entire %APPDATA%itch directory. That could also stop your antivirus from scanning installed games. Investigate the specific detection and verify the installer’s signature before changing security settings.

Update Windows installation
When an update is available, the app displays an “A new version is available” notice. Select it to let itch restart into the newer version. If the update repeatedly fails, skip repeated updater attempts and use a fresh installer from the official download page instead.
macOS: install and verify the itch app
- Download the itch.io app for macOS.
- Open
Install itch.app. - Complete the installation and launch the client.
itch.io says its macOS binaries are signed with an itch corp. Developer ID certificate. If you need to verify an installed copy, use the spctl verification command provided in the official macOS installation guidance and check that the result identifies the expected accepted Developer ID. This is preferable to bypassing macOS security warnings for an unverified copy.
Available updates appear in the top-right area of the app. Use the update control to restart itch into the new version.
Where macOS keeps the library
Dragging itch.app to the Trash removes the application, but it does not remove the library stored in:

~/Library/Application Support/itchGames may also be stored in other install locations selected in Preferences. Keep those locations if you plan to reinstall the client and recover the existing library.
Linux: install, update, and uninstall
Installation
- Download the itch.io app for Linux.
- Open a terminal in the directory containing the installer.
- Make the file executable and run it:
chmod +x itch-setup && ./itch-setupYou can also set the executable permission in your file manager and double-click the installer. The app requires GTK3; on most Debian-based distributions, the relevant package is named libgtk-3-0.
The current Linux installer places the app under:
~/.itchLinux updates
For an installation made through itch-setup, updates appear in the app as an “A new version is available” notice. Linux installations made through another distribution method must be updated through that method or manually. For example, a Flatpak installation should be updated using the Flatpak workflow rather than assuming the itch-setup updater controls it.

The documented uninstall command for the current Linux installation is:

Where itch installs games
On first setup, itch chooses a location where your user account has write access without administrator privileges. You can add additional locations through Preferences. This is useful if you keep games on another drive or need to separate a large library from the operating-system disk.

If games were installed previously but no longer appear in the library, use the app’s install-location management and scanning features to search the existing locations. Reinstalling the client does not necessarily mean that the games themselves must be downloaded again.
What happens when you uninstall itch?

Because the client and game files are stored separately, check your library locations before deleting anything. This separation can help preserve installed games during a client reinstall, but it also means uninstalling the app does not necessarily reclaim all disk space.
Sandboxing and game compatibility
The itch client documents optional or platform-specific ways to sandbox games, but sandboxing is not a guarantee that every downloaded project is safe or that every game will behave identically. itch.io hosts projects from many creators, and the client should not be described as independently validating every upload.
- Linux: the client can use Flatpak-spawn, Bubblewrap, or Firejail. Its documented automatic selection order prefers Bubblewrap when available. Bubblewrap uses Linux namespaces and gives each game a persistent per-game home directory under the installation folder’s
.itch/homepath. - macOS: the client uses the built-in
sandbox-execmechanism and generates a sandbox policy for each game. - Windows: the documented sandbox setup creates an
itch-playeraccount so games can run under a separate user context. This can change where a game stores save files.
If a sandboxed game cannot find its saves, settings, controller configuration, or required files, check the game’s documented storage behavior and the sandbox configuration before assuming that the files were deleted.

The most reliable recovery path for an obsolete or broken client is a fresh installation from the official itch.io page.
- Close the itch app completely.
- Preserve your existing game-install locations and local data unless you specifically intend to remove them.
- Download a fresh installer from the official itch.io desktop app download page.
- Verify the installer where your platform supports it: check the itch corp. signature on Windows or the Developer ID validation on macOS.
- On Linux, confirm that the installer is executable and that GTK3 is installed.
- Run the installer and point the app to your existing library locations if they are not detected automatically.
Do not make manually editing bundled JavaScript, disabling sandboxing, or downloading an unofficial mirror your standard fix. Community discussions may describe workarounds for particular 26.1.9 failures, but those approaches are not equivalent to the official installation procedure and are not universal solutions.

Technical background
The desktop client is an Electron application. Its supporting components include butler, a Go daemon used for downloading, installing, updating, and launching games, and itch-setup, a Go executable used for initial installation and app updates. The client communicates with butler through a TCP-based RPC interface, while installation components are distributed through itch.io’s broth service.
These implementation details explain why the client has separate setup, update, and game-management components, but they are not a reason to replace official installers with manually modified files.
