Dragon Age: Inquisition’s multiplayer is a separate co-op progression track: complete missions with up to three other players, earn experience and gold, acquire gear, salvage what you do not need, and craft equipment. Its progression does not affect the single-player story.
What is the multiplayer mode?
It is an online, cooperative mission mode built around four-player dungeon-crawling. The official manual describes missions for you and up to three friends. BioWare’s 2014 announcement on Xbox Wire calls multiplayer a standalone experience, separate from the open-world story, with no effect on single-player progression.
That separation is the key to understanding the loot loop: multiplayer characters and equipment belong to the co-op experience rather than serving as a route to advance the campaign.
How does multiplayer progression work?
In the progression loop described in a hands-on preview published by Game Informer on August 27, 2014, players earned experience and gold while completing operations. Gold could be spent on randomized chests; unwanted equipment could be salvaged for crafting materials.

- Complete missions. Work through objectives with your team and earn experience and gold.
- Open chests. Spend in-game gold on chests containing random rewards. The 2014 preview said larger chests offered better loot, but it did not establish current prices or drop odds.
- Keep useful gear and salvage the rest. Items you do not want could be turned into crafting components.
- Craft equipment. Use salvaged materials to make weapons and armor, another part of the reward system described in the official announcement.
- Unlock characters. Character unlocks were also part of the mode’s documented rewards.
The same 2014 preview described optional paid chests as a way to speed progression, while saying they did not provide items unavailable through play. That is a historical account of the system, not confirmation of current prices, availability, or loot odds. EA’s product page separately discloses optional virtual-currency purchases for virtual items.
What do missions and combat involve?
The 2014 hands-on report describes modular missions against Demons, Venatori, and Red Templars. It also notes class roles and four mapped abilities per character, giving teams a combat structure beyond simply collecting rewards. In that preview, missions generally took about 20–30 minutes; that was the writer’s observation at the time, not a current or universal average.

Were there special loot events?
Yes. EA’s historical event page records a challenge with goals including completing matches without deaths and killing dragons. Completing the agent goals awarded a Commendation Chest. Those event dates have passed; the page is a record of a past challenge, not an upcoming event schedule.

EA’s product page lists PC storefronts, PlayStation, and Xbox, and says online features require internet access and an EA account. It also says EA may retire online features after notice. Those terms do not establish current server or matchmaking availability on any specific platform, so check current platform and EA service information before relying on online play.
