Start by choosing the class whose combat style appeals to you, then adjust the settings to fit your preferences. You can change abilities outside combat and respec individual skill nodes—or your whole skill tree—so your first build choice need not be permanent. As you progress, coordinate companion abilities, explore thoroughly, and make time for companion and faction quests: those choices and stories can affect later stages.
Set up the game for your preferences
Before heading out, open the settings menu and review the available options, including accessibility customizations. EA’s beginner guide recommends tailoring the experience to your preferences rather than treating one setup as mandatory.
Which class should you choose?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard has three classes: Warrior, Rogue and Mage. The official guides describe their broad combat feel as stalwart, deft and spell-slinging, respectively. Choose the approach you most want to play; the sources do not identify one class as universally best.
| Class | Broad combat feel | Good fit if you prefer |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Stalwart | A sturdy, direct combat approach |
| Rogue | Deft | A nimble, agile approach |
| Mage | Spell-slinging | Fighting with spells |
These are broad descriptions, not a ranking. PlayStation’s overview also describes class weapon choices and combat actions such as attacks, parries and dodges; see its PS5 game overview for more on the game’s combat framing.

Experiment with abilities and respecs
You can swap abilities outside combat and respec either individual skill-tree nodes or the entire tree. That flexibility makes it practical to try a different setup if your current abilities do not suit you. BioWare’s class and respec overview also points to official player resources.
EA’s launch guide gives these sample configurations: a Mage Spellblade with Meteor, Wall of Fire, Chain Lightning and Thunderous End; a Rogue Duelist with A Thousand Cuts, Lightning Flask, Explosive Daggers and Murder of Crows; and a Warrior Champion with Whirlwind, Grappling Spear, Deadly Ground and Warden’s Fire. Treat them as examples to try, not as a current-patch ranking or a claim that these are the strongest builds.

Coordinate companion abilities in combat
Use the ability wheel to check which companion moves can work together and set up compatible abilities rather than activating them without a plan. Xbox Wire gives Harding’s “Shred” and Neve’s “Icebreaker” as an early example of moves that can combine. The EA release announcement says the wheel also lets you direct allies to fight, heal or stay out of the fray.
Some companions can equip healing abilities. Those can be activated during battle and then become available again after a cooldown, so consider whether a healing option would be useful when choosing your party. The official guidance emphasizes ability combinations and customization, not a single required party lineup. For the examples and advice from Xbox Wire, see its beginner tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExplore areas and revisit routes you cannot enter
Exploration opens up after the Prologue and expands through the early quests. Take time to look around for side quests and loot rather than following only the main objective. Some optional routes are blocked until you bring a companion with the ability to move an obstacle or open a path; note those locations and return with a more suitable squad.
Check the map’s collectible counter, and pay attention to hidden chests, materials, destructible containers and doors with mechanisms that require several steps. Xbox Wire’s launch-era advice also describes Dreadwolf statues that point toward a skill-point statuette and Evanuris monuments that lead to additional objects. These are exploration leads, not guarantees about a specific item at every location.

Xbox Wire’s instruction to press B for a quick lunge through destructible objects is for Xbox. On another platform, check that platform’s control scheme rather than assuming the same button.
Pay attention to equipment and elemental effects
Xbox Wire’s launch-era guide says that acquiring another copy of an equipment item improves its rarity, core stats and unlockable enhancements. It also recommends keeping a range of elemental effects available for different enemies. These are practical pointers from that guide, not a promise that every item or encounter follows the same pattern; for exact current behavior, consult the game’s current patch notes.

Make room for companion and faction stories
Companion and faction stories add to the main narrative, and EA says side content and companion quests directly affect later stages. PlayStation also notes that choices in companion stories affect their development and that completing those stories may unlock powerful abilities. Check in with companions and pursue their quests if you want to see more of their stories and the consequences of your choices; you do not need to know specific outcomes in advance.
