If Dragon Age: The Veilguard is taking a long time to compile shaders, there is no published time limit that establishes when a particular PC is stuck. EA’s Patch 2 notes address some crashes during launch-time shader compilation, but do not promise to resolve every slow compile. Start with updates and basic troubleshooting, then narrow down whether the game is merely slow, repeatedly recompiling, or crashing.
Is a long shader-compilation wait normal?
EA has not published a normal shader-compilation time for a specified PC configuration, and the available sources do not identify one universal cause for a delay. An EA forum player reported being near 75% after almost 15 minutes, but that is one person’s experience, not a benchmark for other systems. Read the forum discussion.
Distinguish what is happening before changing settings: a compile that is slow but eventually finishes, a compile that starts again on later launches, and a game that freezes or crashes are different symptoms. Note whether the delay began after a game update or graphics-driver update, and whether you launch through the EA app or another launcher. These details can help support narrow down the problem, but do not establish a cause on their own.
What to try first
1. Update the game, Windows, and graphics driver
Check that The Veilguard, Windows, and your graphics drivers are current. EA staff include updates among general troubleshooting checks for game problems; this is not a guaranteed shader-compilation fix. EA staff troubleshooting guidance.

2. If the game freezes or crashes, follow EA’s PC troubleshooting paths
EA Patch 2’s announcement says it “Reduced instances of a game crash issue during Shader Compilation when launching the game.” That note documents a reduction in crash instances; it does not say that every slow compile was fixed. If your issue includes a freeze or crash, use EA’s guidance for PC crashes and freezing, PC diagnosis, DirectX, or EA app recovery, as relevant to your setup. See EA’s Patch 2 announcement.
3. Check for software conflicts
EA staff troubleshooting guidance suggests checking whether security software, overlays, other background programs, or mods are affecting the game. As a diagnostic test, try launching without mods and with unnecessary background programs closed. EA’s forum post also mentions a clean install and fresh save as general checks; those steps are not official shader-specific remedies, so avoid destructive changes unless you understand their consequences and have protected your saves.

4. Repair the EA app installation, if applicable
If you installed through the EA app, EA staff describes this repair path: Library > select the game > Manage > Repair. The same guidance lists clearing the EA app cache via Help > App Recovery. Should you clear the shader cache or change NVIDIA settings?
Some players have suggested clearing the game’s shader cache or increasing NVIDIA’s shader-cache allocation. These are anecdotal, system-dependent workarounds from community discussion, not verified EA instructions. The discussion offers no controlled comparison or assurance that either change will help. Clearing a cache can mean shaders must be rebuilt, so it may cause another lengthy startup rather than shorten the next one. Avoid repeatedly deleting folders or changing unrelated BIOS and voltage settings: the cited guidance does not establish those as safe, general fixes for a slow compile.

If the delay persists after the basic checks, or the game repeatedly crashes or recompiles, gather details before contacting EA through its PC troubleshooting and support guidance. Include your Windows version, graphics card and driver version, game version, launcher, whether mods or overlays are active, when the issue began, and whether compilation eventually finishes. This gives support a clearer account of the symptom without assuming that a particular component is at fault.

EA has described substantial PC testing for the game, including over 200,000 hours of performance and compatibility testing and PCs accounting for 40% of platform testing effort in its PC-features article. Those are development-testing figures, not a timing target or evidence that a given PC should finish shader compilation within a certain number of minutes. Read EA’s PC features article.
