The release-date countdown is over: DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake launched on November 14, 2024, and DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake followed on October 30, 2025. The remakes are out, but the trilogy’s story order and the versions included in Nintendo’s collection are easy to mix up.
When did Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake come out?
Square Enix announced the November 14, 2024 release date on June 18, 2024. The game launched for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and Steam. Square Enix’s announcement called the remake the narrative beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy.

Square Enix reported on December 6, 2024 that the game had surpassed 2 million worldwide shipments and digital downloads. That figure combines shipments and digital downloads; it is not a physical-sales-only total. The milestone announcement does not establish a current sales total.
When did the rest of the Erdrick Trilogy release?
DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake launched October 30, 2025, completing the remake release sequence. Square Enix announced the date on May 27, 2025, describing the two games as the continuation and conclusion of the previous year’s III remake. The company’s release-date announcement listed Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows.

At launch, Square Enix described I & II as digital-only and gave a US launch price of $99.99 for the collection. That is historical launch information, not a statement of today’s price or availability. The launch announcement lists the platforms and launch details.
Is Dragon Quest III before Dragon Quest I and II?
Yes—in the Erdrick Trilogy’s narrative order, III is the beginning, followed by I and II. Square Enix explicitly describes DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake as the trilogy’s narrative beginning and I & II HD-2D Remake as its continuation and conclusion. That order differs from the games’ original release sequence: the remade III arrived in 2024, before the remade first and second games in 2025.

What is the Erdrick Trilogy collection, and what does it include?
Nintendo’s US store listing describes a digital Nintendo Switch 2 collection containing the Nintendo Switch version of DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake and the Nintendo Switch 2 versions of DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake. In other words, the three games are grouped together, but the collection does not use the same platform version for all three.
Nintendo warns that the Nintendo Switch version of the collection has different contents and advises buyers to check the contents before purchasing. Its listing also says the games can be purchased separately. Compare the specific edition and platform versions shown on the Nintendo US collection page with the edition you intend to buy; do not assume that the Switch and Switch 2 collections are interchangeable.

Should you buy Dragon Quest III alone or the collection?
- Choose the standalone game if you want only III, or need it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, or Steam. Square Enix announced the standalone remake for those platforms as well as Nintendo Switch.
- Consider the collection if you want all three remakes together. Check the listing for your console carefully, because Nintendo says the Switch collection’s contents differ from the Switch 2 collection.
- Compare separate purchases if you already own one or more of the games. Nintendo says the games are also sold individually, so the bundle is not the only route to the trilogy.
Current prices and stock are not established here. Check the relevant store listing before buying rather than treating the US collection’s $99.99 launch price as a current offer.

In Square Enix’s account, the story begins when Ortega leaves his wife and child to defeat Baramos. He fails, leaving the threat unresolved. On the child’s sixteenth birthday, the king of Aliahan sends Ortega’s child to finish the quest. That premise sets up III as the trilogy’s narrative starting point, even though the remakes of I and II came out later.
