Speak to the old man in the southern house and answer “Yes” twice. The Merchant’s departure is temporary in the remake: after leaving them to help the settlement, return to Aliahan to pick them up.
How to reach Merchant Town
The settlement is also called Immigrant Town in some references. This route follows the directions in a GameFAQs walkthrough; it is a guide recommendation, not a claim of firsthand testing.
- Bring a Merchant. If you do not have one in your active party, the walkthrough suggests creating a level 1 Merchant at the Aliahan Party Planner. It does not establish that a newly created Merchant is required.
- Travel to Portoga and board the ship.
- Sail west until you reach land, then follow the coast north. Look for a small clearing in a forest.
- Enter the clearing and speak with the old man in the southern house. Answer “Yes” twice to leave the Merchant and help establish the settlement.
How to get your Merchant back
After leaving the Merchant at the settlement, return to Aliahan to retrieve the party member, as the walkthrough directs. In the remakes, this separation is temporary; advice based on the NES version that the Merchant is permanently lost does not apply here. The remake distinction is noted by the community-maintained Dragon Quest Wiki entry on Immigrant Town.
When to revisit and what changes
Return to the town periodically as you progress through the story. The walkthrough recommends checking on its development and looking for a hidden item, but the available references do not establish a precise visit count, upgrade schedule, or the item’s location.

The remake adds notices when the boom town upgrades. The same community reference describes a Goodybag disguised as a Merchant walking around at night, a Merchant conversation reflecting on the townspeople’s revolt that plays a cutscene, and an ending that shows the town thriving, with citizens meeting in the Merchant’s former mansion. These details do not establish every upgrade trigger or a complete list of stage-by-stage rewards.
