Its diorama-style presentation and combat conveniences make a strong case for the remake, but the main story has been streamlined and the adventure remains long. Returning players who prize the earlier game’s fuller scope may be less enthusiastic.
What is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?
Square Enix describes Dragon Quest VII Reimagined as a full remake of DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The story begins with a young fisherman’s son and his childhood friends on Estard. Their discovery of the Shrine of Mysteries leads them into the past, where they uncover lands that have been sealed away. The adventure unfolds through individual vignettes tied to an overarching story.
The game was released on February 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows, according to Square Enix’s announcement. The North American Square Enix Store listing includes physical standard editions for PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Edition and physical availability depend on platform and region.
What changed in the remake?
A new diorama-style look
Square Enix rebuilt the presentation around a handcrafted, diorama-like art direction. Producer Takeshi Ichikawa described the approach as a way “to depict the depth and feel of DRAGON QUEST VII’s story more vividly,” adding that the team used “a hand-crafted art style and developing in-game environments that resembles dioramas.” The wording is from the publisher’s announcement.

A streamlined main story
Square Enix says the main story has been streamlined to make it more approachable. That may help newcomers settle into a lengthy adventure, but it is also the clearest point of difference for returning players who value the earlier game’s full shape. The available information does not establish a complete, feature-by-feature comparison with the 3DS remake, so the scope change should not be taken to mean that any particular island or quest was removed.
Less friction in combat and vocation growth
The official store listing names battle-speed adjustments, auto-battle, vocation-specific abilities, and the option for characters to fight according to selected tactics without turn-by-turn interruptions. The new Moonlighting system lets a character use two vocations at once, drawing on abilities, spells, and perks from both.

- Hand-Crafted Aesthetic - The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series Enhanced Story - While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames
In his review, published February 2, 2026, TechRadar’s Hamish Hector also noted faster animations, Let Loose effects, and the ability to defeat some enemies in the overworld before a battle starts. Hector said Moonlighting could reduce the grind involved in unlocking higher-tier vocations. These are his review observations, not independent performance or gameplay testing.
Who is it worth playing for?
It suits newcomers and players who want smoother pacing
The remake’s strongest appeal is the combination of a distinct visual refresh and conveniences that reduce combat interruptions. Hector praised those changes and saw appeal for both RPG newcomers and genre fans. The streamlined story may also suit players who want to experience the premise without seeking out the earlier version’s full structure.

- DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined combines stunning diorama style graphics with Akira Toriyama's signature character design, making every encounter vibrant, deep and adventurous.
- Lost stone fragments unlock portals leading to long-lost eras, each with unique challenges to face. Heal the islands, solve mysteries and form alliances in the past to bring life back to the present.
- DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is told through a series of wide-ranging narrative cartoons. The main story has been streamlined to make the adventure more accessible to all players
- The combat system of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been extensively modified. Turn the tide of battles with new vocation benefits. Each vocation has its own unique ability, from aggressive attacks to supportive actions. Battle speed increments and an automatic battle feature are also available. Battles can continue without interruption between rounds, depending on the tactics selected for the protagonist and allies.
- Customize your play style with the new dynamic of dual craft. With two vocations assigned at the same time, you will have access to both unique abilities, spells and benefits.
It may not suit players looking for a short RPG
Hector cautioned that the game remains long, even with faster encounters. He also noted that its cute aesthetic and familiar story conventions will not appeal to everyone. If you want a compact adventure, or if your main reason to revisit Dragon Quest VII is its original scope, those are meaningful concessions rather than minor details.
Platform and performance considerations
Hector reported playing on Nintendo Switch 2 in both docked and handheld modes and experiencing no noticeable performance problems during his review session. That is a report about his setup and experience, not a guarantee for every platform or player.
