Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a remake of the 2000 PlayStation RPG, rebuilt with miniature-inspired visuals and revised systems for modern play. It launched on February 5, 2026, with the Steam release dated February 6 in Square Enix’s media kit. The early hands-on preview below covers a short pre-release session; it is not a review of the complete released game.
What is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined retells Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, which first released on PlayStation in 2000. The story begins on Estard, a secluded island where childhood friends discover fragments of an ancient tablet. Those pieces open paths into lost eras, sending the party between past and present as it works to restore islands and make allies.
Square Enix describes the art direction as hand-crafted and inspired by miniature figurines. Towns, environments, and dungeons are presented with a diorama-like look. The publisher’s official tagline is “Fix the Past, Save the Present!” Square Enix’s game page also describes the story as accessible and streamlined, but does not specify exact changes to the original’s content or length.
What changed in the remake?
Visible enemies and flexible combat pace
Enemies appear in the field rather than emerging through random encounters. The publisher says weaker foes can be defeated directly on the field without entering a battle. When combat does begin, the system remains turn-based, but players can use auto-battle, set tactics, and adjust battle speed. With tactics configured, combat can proceed without pausing between turns.

- Classic Combat, Improved! - The battle system in DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has undergone significant changes. Turn the tides of battle with new vocational perks. Each vocation has its own unique ability, from all-out attacks to those that support your allies. Battle speed adjustments and an auto-battle feature are also available. Battles can progress without interruptions between each turn, depending on the tactics selected for the protagonist and allies. While on the field, players can pre-emptively strike monsters and instantly defeat them If the monster is weaker than the party.
Vocations and Moonlighting
Characters can master vocations, each with distinct spells and abilities. Moonlighting lets a character hold two vocations at once, while vocation-specific perks become available after a character gets worked up. Square Enix lists these as features of the game, but the published descriptions do not detail every vocation or perk.
A story presented in vignettes
The Square Enix Store describes a sequence of individual vignettes beneath an overarching narrative. Tablet fragments connect these stories to lost eras and islands that can be restored. The publisher calls the main story streamlined for accessibility; that description alone does not establish which scenes or quests changed from earlier versions.

What the pre-release hands-on preview covered
In a hands-on report published November 20, 2025, Tom’s Guide writer Tony Polanco said he played for the better part of an hour. His session focused on Wetlock, a village connected to the sea demon Gracos. The party he describes included the protagonist, Maribel, Aishe, and Ruff. He encountered visible enemies, could choose to avoid or surprise them, and used turn-based combat with manual actions or preset tactics and adjustable battle speed. He also tried vocations and Moonlighting before facing a difficult Gracos boss fight. These are Polanco’s observations from one limited preview session, not a complete assessment of the released game. Read the hands-on report at Tom’s Guide.
Polanco also reported that the character models looked like miniature dolls and that Square Enix had 3D-scanned real-life dolls for the game. That detail is his report; Square Enix’s official materials describe the miniature-inspired visual style but do not confirm the scanning process.

Is there a physical edition?
Yes. The North American Square Enix Store lists a physical Standard Edition as part of its Collector’s Edition set. The publisher describes that set as exclusive to the Square Enix Store and available in limited quantities. It includes the game in a platform-specific steelbook case, a DRAGON QUEST Smile Slime plush, a ship-in-a-bottle figure, and digital upgrade and early-bonus DLC. The steelbook holds either a game disc or a game card, depending on the selected platform.
The publisher’s listing documents those products, not current stock or availability at other retailers. Check the relevant retailer for present-day inventory, platform format, and pricing.
Who should consider this remake?
The premise and core lineage make Reimagined relevant both to players curious about the 2000 game and to newcomers who want a long-form fantasy adventure with turn-based combat. Its visible enemies, configurable battle pace, and two-vocation system are clearly described changes, while the short pre-release session cannot establish how those systems balance across the whole game. There is no platform-specific performance evidence here to declare one version the best choice; base a platform decision on the systems you own, preferred format, and local store listing.
